Great characters and outstanding world-building
- By Antennenwels on 18-07-21
Summary
In the aftermath of the First World War, a young woman gets swept into a glittering world filled with illicit magic, romance, blood debts and murder in this lush and decadent debut novel.
On Crow Island, people whispered, real magic lurked just below the surface. But Annie Mason never expected her enigmatic new neighbour to be a witch.
When she witnesses a confrontation between her best friend, Bea, and the infamous Emmeline Delacroix at one of Emmeline's extravagantly illicit parties, Annie is drawn into a glittering haunted world. A world where magic can buy what money cannot; a world where the consequence of a forbidden blood bargain might be death.
Critic reviews
"Brimming with romance and gilded with danger, Wild Wicked Things is a heady, lyrical gem of a book." (Hannah Whitten, New York Times best-selling author of For the Wolf)

Incredibly overwrought
Billed as Great Gatsby with queerness and magic which, I suppose, it is. Also VERY strong echoes of Practical Magic in places (the film rather than the book). You'll see what I mean when you get to it. Everything is just a bit too INTENSE for my taste so it feels very YA. Everyone has extreme heightened emotions ALL THE TIME, which is exhausing to listen to. It's ostensibly set in England and is by an English author but somehow felt very East Coast USA. I think I'm too old and cynical for this but liked the idea of a backlash to the use of magic in WW1.
