Summary

Karina DeRoss lines up 40 Ambien, intent on terminal sleep. Just months ago, she lost her only child to a fentanyl overdose. But instead of a final exit, she finds herself in snowy Choteau, Montana, her hometown, rescued by her aging and alcoholic parents. Then she runs into her childhood best friend, the one person she betrayed as much as her Emma.

Darren Hassack promised himself he’d never forgive Karina. Back in junior high, she’d thrown him away for the popular crowd. And she’d known he was on his own without her. His Blackfoot and Hutterite heritage meant he straddled an invisible line of race and “otherness” yet never had a foothold on either side. But one look at his now shattered, long-ago best friend, and he finds himself not only offering his shoulder to cry on but his own home for her to recover, and a job as an extra hand for this year’s barley crop.

A Korean proverb says that when a child dies, you bury the child in your heart. It is a grief swaddled and held close, but it’s nearly unbearable to witness, especially for Darren who has never dealt with his own grief, let alone his loss of trust in Karina. As winter turns to spring and the night stays a midnight blue, grief will break them both. They must decide if they want to rebuild to live, truly live.

Wild Rose Water explores the connections we have to our past, to our grief, to the land we call home, and to love.

Emotional

Wild Rose Water is a beautifully written novel and touching with realistic and imperfect characters. Karina and Darren's story is quite touching and moving, shaped by rough childhoods, betrayal, loss, grief, growth, and redemption. Karina is dealing with a personal tragedy, one no mother should ever have to endure, the death of a child. Red L Jameson is an incredible storyteller; she took on a delicate and painful subject and made it powerful. I was entirely immersed in her story and the characters.

Clare Silver and Chase T. Walker did an excellent job with the narration. They each breathed life into the characters and Red L Jameson's beautiful words. Wild Rose Water is an emotional tale and so worth the listen.

I loved it

Being a mom of three, this is something no one would ever want to have to face. As far as her daughter was concerned, all of her feelings were valid regardless how no parent should ever have to feel them. However, in the midst of feeling that way, she also struggled with the feelings she still had about her old friend Dar. Regardless of how she treated him, she never forgot about him and moving in with him just renewed those feelings and made them stronger. The same went for him, but he still had anger and fear around her: anger for what she did and fear of her leaving him again. But of course, their main problem was communication, they wouldn't talk about any of it and when something happened, one of them would explode and they would be back at square one. Can they figure out how communicate in order to be together or will they end it completely. sorry, no answers here.

These narrators were new to me but I absolutely loved them. The emotions they showed for their character was raw and at some points had me in tears feeling like I was part of the family feeling the pain. I definitely look forward to hearing more of their work.

Rose

Great narration from Clare Silver and Chase T. Walker, perfect.

A story of loss, betrayal, and redemption found through grief and second chances.
Two very damaged souls. Karina and Darren , deep storylines.

I was hooked from the start to the very end. Darren and Karina are wonderfully flawed characters, both with heavy back stories .

An emotionally beautiful book
