Summary

Wildness is a kind of magic.

Discover a land of enchantment, legend and adventure in this first book of The Immortals series, featuring an updated cover - perfect for longtime fans and newcomers alike.

Daine has always had a special connection with animals, but only when she’s forced to leave home does she realise it’s more than a knack...it’s magic. With this wild magic, not only can Daine speak to animals, but she can also make them obey her. Daine takes a job handling horses for the Queen’s Riders, where she meets the master mage Numair and becomes his apprentice.

Under Numair’s guidance, Daine explores the scope of her magic. But she encounters other beings, too, who are not so gentle. These terrifying creatures, called Immortals, have been imprisoned in the Divine Realms for the past 400 years - but now someone has broken the barrier. And it’s up to Daine and her friends to defend their world from an Immortal attack.

A sweet coming of age fantasy with a found family

I adored this story. It was sweet and heartwarming, but didn't lack for action and adventure either. Hearing/Watching as Daine grew up across the pages, growing into her magic and discovering her new family after all she had lost... 100% I am going to be reading the rest of these stories!

Relived an old childhood favourite

I love the work of Tamora Pierce and this book was the one to welcome me in. I still read it to this day (15 years later). I do wish that the audio performance was a little better. It was hard to tell the difference between characters and the pace just wasn't there. Pierce's bring this world to life beautifully with ink and paper, but this performance falls short of capturing it.

Book 4 will spoil this for you

I feel compelled to leave a review here. I'm sorry if I will spoil something, but it has to be said:

This is a wonderful book, and I'd heartily recommend it, especially for young girls if it weren't for one thing:.

In this book Daine is a 13 year old girl. She meets an older mage, around 30, and is in awe of him. He is her mentor. He calls her things like 'my little magelet' and is very affectionate to her. I took that as fatherly affection. But by the time she's 15, it's way too much affection and very creepy. When she is 16, (in book 4), they get together and it turns out he always had feelings for her. Not that long after she starts having kids.

I'm sorry, but that's the worst kind of example you could set for young girls. The author defended it as 'Daine was the one pursuing him" but that's what groomers do, don't they? Make the object of their interest think they are so grown up, and that it is their own idea because the groomer is just so much fun/interesting to be with. She's 13 when they meet. And he already knows she's the one?

Ruined the whole series for me.

nostalgic...

I lived these stories when I was young and they still hold a magic now. Sarah was a good narrator. I believed her as Daine and she did differentiate between the other characters well. will be buying the second..

Book great, narrator not

Narrator's mispronunciation and incorrect sentence emphasis is irritating and pulls you out of the story however the story itself is great so still manage to get to the end.

Interesting and imaginative

It is a very well written story which contains many other twisting tales which intertwine to form and enchanting story. I enjoyed it a lot and I'm looking forward to the next book.
