Summary
AS HEARD ON THE DIARY OF A CEO PODCAST
Calorie information is ubiquitous. On packaged food, restaurant menus and online recipes, we see authoritative numbers that tell us the calorie count of what we're about to consume. And we treat these numbers as gospel; counting, cutting, intermittently consuming and, if you believe some 'experts' out there, magically making them disappear. We all know, and governments advise, that losing weight is just a matter of burning more calories than we consume.
Here's the thing, however, that most people have no idea about. All of the calorie counts that you see everywhere today, are wrong.
In Why Calories Don't Count, Dr Giles Yeo, obesity researcher at Cambridge University, challenges the conventional model and demonstrates that all calories are not created equal. He addresses why popular diets succeed, at least in the short term, and why they ultimately fail, and what your environment has to do with your bodyweight.
Once you understand that calories don't count, you can begin to make different decisions about how you choose to eat, learning what you really need to be counting instead. Practical, science-based and full of illuminating anecdotes, this is the most entertaining dietary advice you'll ever come across.

Useful book
Loved it it. Very useful and very well explained. Please persevere through the complexity of chapter 3. The rest is a delight.

Boring
This book is just brings together ‘already known’ science together on this topic in one place. Far too detailed. If I want to know the history of the kilo calorie and how it was discovered, named and numerous associated calculations - I’ll look it up thanks. Title is deceiving, nothing new.

Thoroughly engaging narrator!
Some parts of the book were heavy going eg Krebs cycle, but Prof Yeo’s personality made this book a very enjoyable listen.
And it’s made me reevaluate many of my preconceptions!

exactly what it says it is
very factual and scientific, but the science broken down into digestible pieces.
Read by author, who isn't a voice actor but tries his best.
the "story" is of the diet industry and the misinformation we have been fed. A useful look at what we should be eating and why- without judgement. I would recommend to friends who are looking to learn about nutrition and diet

Would recommend to everyone!
Dr. Giles is an amazing communicator. He expertly breaks down the cutting edge of scientific knowledge on the biochemistry of digestion, in a very accessible way.
He’s surprisingly adept in narrating his own book. I found it highly entertaining.

Interesting look at caloric availability in foods
A decent breakdown of why the calories contained within a given food aren't necessarily the calories available. Well read by the author with a few "dad" jokes to keep the listen enjoyable.
