Summary

This stunning fantasy inspired by Chinese folklore is a companion novel to Starry River of the Sky and the New York Times best-selling and National Book Award finalist When the Sea Turned to Silver.

In the valley of Fruitless mountain, a young girl named Minli lives in a ramshackle hut with her parents. In the evenings, her father regales her with old folktales of the Jade Dragon and the Old Man on the Moon, who knows the answers to all of life's questions. Inspired by these stories, Minli sets off on an extraordinary journey to find the Old Man on the Moon to ask him how she can change her family's fortune. She encounters an assorted cast of characters and magical creatures along the way, including a dragon who accompanies her on her quest for the ultimate answer.

Grace Lin, author of the beloved Year of the Dog and Year of the Rat, returns with a wondrous story of adventure, faith, and friendship. A fantasy crossed with Chinese folklore, Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is a timeless story reminiscent of The Wizard of Oz and Kelly Barnhill's The Girl Who Drank the Moon. Once again, she has created a charming, engaging book for young listeners.

My kids looked forward to listening to this book

Janet Song does a wonderful job narrating and Grace Lin knocked it out of the park! It was a sweet time spent with my kiddos as we dove into this book. We had deep, rich conversations about Minli and the adventure that took place in this book.

Fun read

Good story however some of the side stories really made me loose interest and I had to pause to come back a different day. I also really wish the author spent more time showing the dragons in the end of the story. there was so much build up for that than not much time spent there in the end. The ending itself was much shorter and airy than I was hoping. I suppose it was fine but it just wasn't as satisfying as I was hoping for given the build up. For me if there is good buildup I expect a satisfying climax and it just wasn't there.

Perfect in every way

Grace Lin has the magical ability to make the reader feel like they are somehow inside the story. There were also some cultural "ahas" such as the reasons behind some of the common themes in Chinese illustrations and figurines, such as the laughing, pink-cheeked twins and the boy on the water buffalo.

Janet Song's narration was perfect, and perhaps contributed to the feeling that I was inside the story.
