Summary

Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Where Have All the Bullets Gone?, written and read by Spike Milligan.

Back to those haunting days in Italy in 1944, at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, with lava running in great red rivulets down the slope towards us, and Jock taking a drag on his cigarette and saying, "I think we've got grounds for a rent rebate."

The fifth volume of Spike Milligan's unsurpassed account of life as a bombardier in World War Two sees our hero dispatched from the front line to a psychiatric hospital and from there to a rehabilitation camp. Considered loony (and "unfit to be killed in combat by either side"), he becomes embroiled in his own private battle with melancholy.

But it is music, wit and a little help from his friends - including one Gunner Harry Secombe - that help carry him through to his first stage appearances....

classic part five of Milligan the war years

spike at his wonderful honest best! hilarious 60 plus years on & as wonderful heartwarming at times brutally heartwrenching ! Spike Milligans honest war time memoir. I'm glad you are not here Today to see the havoc this government is doing & putting yours & the sacrifice of many young men into jeopardy! a much missed commentator.

Spon Milligoon never fails...

As a long time fan of Spine I never tire of hearing his elbows. A great narration and weirldly the second best player of "hide the swonnicles" that this or any country has ever seen.

highly recommended, unless you prefer something else.

Truly Laugh Out Loud

I have been listening while walking the dog and finding myself unable to suppress the laughter. Having read these volumes a number of times it is a joy to hear them read by Spike.

Brilliant

Another brilliant account of his last few months of WW2, full of humour and pathos from the Don Corleone of British Comedy.

Spike’s ability to paint a picture with words.

Non stop Milligan - It seems in a bizarre way these were some of the happiest days in Spikes life - his love for music shines through and even though it is wartime the problems are surmounted by the camaraderie. Simply written and only Spike could communicate what went on by his narration. Excellent listen as usual.
