About this listen

Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Peace Work, written and read by Spike Milligan.

"I had not informed my parents of my return. I wanted it to be a lovely surprise; it was for me - they were away...."

The seventh and last volume of Spike Milligan's memoirs sees our hero returning from war and Italy...but to what? Aside from shooting large, inaccurate guns at Germans, all he has done for five long years is blow a trumpet, tell rude jokes and write and perform sketches for the entertainment of bored and murderous soldiers. Who on Earth is going to pay a civilian to do more of that?

From the giddy heights of Hackney Empire to a Zurich freak show and beyond, Spike makes his way through the backwaters of showbiz, first as a band musician then as a one-man wild act and eventually in the company of a group of like-minded comedians called Harry Secombe, Michael Bentine and Peter Sellers. They decide to call themselves The Goons....

Still a funny series of stories

Obviously recorded in Spikes later years, so the delivery and clarity is not what it used to be but the writing still sparkles. And the accents he does and the giggling at various points about the situation he is in and the people he is with really bring it to life. I actually prefer this book to most of the war in action books

After the War

First time I've heard of this book, having read all the others.

Interesting to find out what he did after the War.

The end of Spike Milligans war memoirs

I revisited these after 35 years and as a old soldier myself I still found the squaddie humour funny I guess soldiering is timeless
There is a noticeable change in his voice in vol 3 as I guess there was a gap from the other recordings but it just added to an old soldier reliving his salad days
A troubled man later in life but then again he wasn’t the only one from that period
Try the goons as well they are great

Petered Out

This series started well and the tales of the war years were very entertaining. What followed got progressively bland.
Instead of finishing with the massive success of the Goons, Spike stops short and I was left feeling deflated as he went out with a whimper not a bang.
Some of the books were also technically deficient, the sound engineer should have been shot.
