Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Your behaviour is the only behaviour over which you have absolute control. To change your children's behaviour, you first need to change your own.

The culture of any home is determined by the parents. If you can remain unflappably calm in the face of every supermarket tantrum and sarcastic eye-roll, order will soon follow.

Here, Paul Dix - Britain's leading children's behaviour expert - reveals how to build a culture of calm consistency into your home, starting today. He explains how you really can maintain a sense of Zen-like serenity in the face of even the most chaotic behaviour, from school-gate screaming matches to mealtime childmageddon. And he offers a set of simple strategies for coolly getting the behaviour you want - without a barked instruction, deranged punishment or cold, hard cash-bribe in sight.

His tried-and-tested method will change what your child does by first changing what you do. You will never need to raise your voice again.

Critic reviews

This book is an absolute game-changer. Paul manages to impart practical wisdom about our behaviour as parents - and how small changes have huge impacts - without ever sounding preachy. I laughed, nodded, winced a few times and most importantly felt inspired to make slow, incremental changes to how we do things in our house. Warm, funny and extraordinarily helpful. A must-read for anyone who looks after children. (SARAH TURNER, aka The Unmumsy Mum)
In this fantastic book Paul empowers us parents to put our energy and focus where we can have the most influence: over our own behaviour. With wit and warmth, he teaches us the most miraculous thing - that when we change, our children change too. This is a book every parent needs to read. (Zoe Blaskey, creator of Motherkind)
Many of us have children. Not enough of us truly parent. In this transformative book, Paul Dix offers a simple method to revolutionise the culture in your home - one that will change your children's behaviour and yours. He gets it: the most important part of high performance is high-performance parenting, and this book shows you how to get there. (Jake Humphrey, author of High Performance)

Excellent and so practical.

Paul Dix's "When the Parents Change, Everything Changes" isn't marketed as a gentle/respectful parenting book, but I think it perfectly summarises the main ideas behind the philosophy of raising children with respect and kindness without losing sight of your own needs.
I most appreciated how practical the book is and how much the author focuses on providing solutions for real-life situations and issues parents face daily.
Overall, "When the Parents Change, Everything Changes" is an extremely practical and down-to-earth book full of ideas and suggestions for real-life scenarios and the usual challenges of parenting. Thank you, Paul.

That’s THE Parenting Book

I bought a lot of parenting books. This is THE BOOK, the Holy Grail. ONLY practical advice, no in depth analysis of child psychology which is good but it doesn’t teach you anything. Here I found WHAT I can do, in a sense I also realised I’ve been doing somethings right. Do not think twice. I bought the Kindle version as well which is great. Highly and absolutely recommend it.

A practical guide, based on experience and a relational approach.

Well structured with plenty of practical tips, backed up by experience and underpinned by a relational approach. I’m a teacher and listened because I’ve enjoyed Paul’s other work. My children are now in their 20s but I know that these approaches worked for them.

Probably better suited to older kids

Probably better suited to older kids. Also: vast majority of the examples seem to stem from the sphere of delinquency / really troubled kids from troubled families. Rather than the daily life of getting your kids to put shoes on in time for school. I would have liked it to be more useful and tangible too our situation. Also: I dislike the advice to have everything scripted and prepared, everything.
