Can a person literally die of loneliness? Is there a connection between the ability to express emotions and Alzheimer's disease? Is there such a thing as a 'cancer personality'?

Drawing on deep scientific research and Dr Gabor Maté's acclaimed clinical work, When the Body Says No provides the answers to critical questions about the mind-body link - and the role that stress and our emotional makeup play in an array of common diseases.

When the Body Says No

  • Explores the role of the mind-body link in conditions and diseases such as arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, irritable bowel syndrome and multiple sclerosis.
  • Shares dozens of enlightening case studies and stories, including those of people such as Lou Gehrig (ALS), Betty Ford (breast cancer), Ronald Reagan (Alzheimer's), Gilda Radner (ovarian cancer) and Lance Armstrong (testicular cancer).
  • Reveals 'The Seven A's of Healing': principles in healing and the prevention of illness from hidden stress.

Priceless

Dr Gabor Mate has the medical background, experience and research to provide the scientific evidence for that which I have come to see and believe for myself about myself through self enquiry and supporting others with their life challenges. It is refreshing to know that there is hope for healing in many medical cases where currently there is little more than body taxing treatment of symptoms. This is a book about health and I can not recommend it highly enough.
In today’s society where more and more of us are meeting emotional challenges without the wherewithal to most effectively handle them, and children are frequently ‘ignored’ by overburdened parents in favour of mechanical and/or technological babysitters, this book is indeed Priceless.
Thank you Gabor for your wisdom, willingness to share your own impediments and for you research and voice.

What can we do to help?

Great book to prove the impact of trauma and stress has on the body but very little if any focus on what we can to resolve and heal ourselves especially from childhood traumas. Can be stressful and listening to how your own could be impacting your body. Be in a relatively good place in your own mental health before reading. But nonetheless good information to listen to and inform yourself.

Got more from this than I expected!

I bought this book to help understand went some people experience disease and mental health issues as I have had family members affected in this way.
It was a fascinating book, it really appealed to my scientific nature, not only lots of physiology and psychology but it was the integration that really enthused me.
I started out trying to find reasons for my family's various health problems but I ended up discovering an awful lot about myself, mainly, that I need to do some self-work to avoid becoming a statistic!
Can thoroughly recommend this book.

A new understanding of disease

A must read for anyone working with clients with chronic disease or those suffering from one. This book looks at disease from the viewpoint of psychogical stressors and sees disease as the outcome when we are unable to remove ourselves from those stressors

This book should be a must for everyone!

A brilliantly conceived book with a blend of science, evidence, personal stories and empathy that makes for a thought provoking read from start to finish. If you are interested in trauma informed practice at any level this is a must. Thank you Dr Mate
