Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

As any feminist who talks about the problems of girls and women will know, the first question you will ever be asked is 'But what about MEN?' After eleven years of writing bestsellers about women and dismissing this question, having been very sure that the concerns of feminism and men are very different things, Caitlin Moran realised that this wasn't quite right, and that the problems of feminism are also the problems of, yes, men.

So, what about men? Why do they only go to the doctor if their wife or girlfriend makes them? Why do they never discuss their penises with each other - but make endless jokes about their balls? What is porn doing for young men? Is their fondness for super-skinny jeans leading to an epidemic of bad mental health? Are men allowed to be sad? Are men allowed to lose? Have Men's Rights Activists confused 'power' with 'empowerment'? And is Jordan B Peterson just your mum - but with some mad theory about a lobster?

In this book, Caitlin intends to answer all this and more - because if men haven't yet answered the question 'What About Men?', it's going to be down to a busy woman to do it.

Mind opened

As a man, we want an expert to explain stuff to us. Turns out Caitlin may be one of those experts. Fact based and source driven data (real mens opinions). My eyes were opened, and thoughts provoked. Porn, lady parts, relationships, and my struggles to seek help all explored.

Would love this to be mandatory read in schools!

An amazing book celebrating men whilst confronting the dangerous impact and power of a mean minority.

Thank you for holding women to account too!

A bit middle class

Some good points but it's a bit middle class.
Can't imagine working class men relating to it much

The start for a interesting conversation

Thought provoking and the start of a interesting discussion about the new position of boys and men in the modern world. This is a good read.

A valuable contribution to an essential conversation

As a woman reading a book written by a woman that’s all about men, this can only be a contribution, not ‘my truth from one man’s perspective’ as those other similarly intended books that I’ve read and learned from which are written by men. However it’s a fantastically compassionate, generous and brave perspective on how the patriarchy is ruining men’s lives as well as women’s. It explores some very difficult issues and I learned plenty of useful information and perspectives. It’s a clear invitation to men and women to treat ourselves and each other as human beings.

It’s very relatable, warm-hearted and highly recommended as a conversation starter. I’m buying several to share with my (wonderful) male family and friends.

Another success

I went in wondering why one of my favourite feminists was tackling men’s issues, but gave it a chance. So glad I did! As a mother of a young boy, she opened my eyes to problems women know a BIT about, but not enough. It definitely started conversations with my husband and female friends about friendship and loneliness. The part about boys in school broke my heart!

From a mans POV. This is an enlightening summary.

This novel touches on the lack of intersectional feminism. Where the solutions to feminists problems is to help the men out. A least a good bit. After all they are one half of the population.

Moran is quite blunt and honest in her rhetoric. But that is the charm in this book.

Its easy to pretend that as men we don’t need to be told this and that. Until you end up stressing yourself out about things you somehow can’t articulate. To which this book highlights that attitude and breaks it down.

This book isn’t the pinnacle of male empowerment analysis. Its only a commentary. But it’s a good book to build off of.

Well done for standing up for men too Caitlin

Very interesting and the author makes some really good points.
Find some of the things she assumes women do and behave like slightly annoying and irritating but understand the basis of it . Think she makes very plausible comments about men and think it’s great that she’s pointed out the difficulties they face. She has and shown men need to fight for things in the men ‘s corner as much as women have fought for things in theirs theirs .
