Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

What do you do when your relationship suddenly ends? How do you cope when the cosy 'coupley' future you had planned disappears?

Join comedian Helen Thorn from The Scummy Mummies as she haphazardly takes the plunge into single life for the first time in 22 years.

Helen shares her own roller-coaster journey from the initial shock of a surprise separation, the messy months hanging out in her PJs through to the highs of rediscovering online dating, tiny pants, rock-solid female friendships and the glorious joy of just being by herself.

With the help of relationship experts and an army of women 'who know', Get Divorced, Be Happy will show you that going it alone isn't the end, it is just the beginning, and you will come out the other side, stronger, happier and goddamn sassier than ever before.

The Hitchhikers Guide to Being Happy

A very honest, candid and thought provoking insight to betrayal, separation, divorce and finding yourself again. Helen really bares her soul with humility, heartfelt and brutal honesty and brilliant humour of what it's like to wake up and realise the life you had isn't what you thought it was and that, by no fault of your own, your whole world has been turned upside down by someone who you loved, cared for and trusted and who had promised to love, respect and protect you forever.

But instead of crumbling, you grabbed the bull by the horns and you decided, however hard, to live and be happy. This could have been a self-prophesying, sickly 'do it this way like me' type of book but it is anything but and it's refreshing to hear the whole truth, highs and lows, triumphs and mistakes alike.

People everywhere, from all walks of life, male and female, young and old will have no regrets and will benefit from reading this book. (Well everyone other than her ex - he'll regret that he no longer has the privilege of calling Helen his wife and realise, if he hasn't already, what an absolute, massive wanker he really is).

Bravo Helen, you've done yourself, your children and your family proud and empowered singletons everywhere 🤍💙🤍

Honest, funny, practical, uplifting

I too broke up during lockdown, after 24 years. About 6 months behind Helen I devoured this book. Lot's of parallels for me, apart from Tinder. Not ready for sex with another man yet, but here's hoping!
I know I'm much happier on my own and I comprised way too much. After 2 major bereavements in less than a year he was a complete shit to me when I needed him most. Selfish doesn't come close. I think lockdown made me realise that life is too short to put up with indifference and absence of love, because while I visited hospitals he got busy with another woman. My mum left me some money and I went to bed that night knowing that she had set me free. Thank you Helen for making me see that I'm ok and not alone.

Cliched and desperate

Get over a 20 year relationship by drinking rosè with ya gal pals. Desperate to tell us how #blessed she is to have so many friends falling over themselves to bring wine and lasagne. The whole ‘it’s fantastic being single and living with a vibrator and eating pizza thing’ rings a bit hollow. Was surprised to hear this person call herself a ‘comedian’ Tedious and cringeworthy. I guess she wrote it in an effort to convince the ex that she’s better off without him. It’s therapy for her and a bore for everyone else. How was this ever published? Read Rosie Green’s How to heal a broken heart’ for a far superior book on the subject.

Holy shit balls of wow!!!

Helen, you totally rock and might have saved my life!
I found myself in the same circs seven years ago. We had the same career so I retrained yet have had temp contracts, knock backs, debts, house falling to bits and generally been kicked in the fanny over and over!!!!
I was giving up hope but this book has given me super- powered- Helen- fucking- Wonder Woman- sparkling bloody glitter hope ( with a mighty bloody feminism fist of ‘women rock!’).
I don’t have enough words to express how glad I am (and gutted) that you were placed on this journey..!
For every ‘FFS’ you have saved a soul xxxx
Love you guys 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻🌼

If you feel like your only option is to stay for the kids then read this. no decision needs to be made immediately but it really helped me put things in perspective. maybe I'll get brave.

Not accurate for most….

Hated it. This is nothing like how separation actually is for most people, unless of course you’re surrounded by 20 friends, not enduring custody fights over very small children and worrying how you’re going to feed your kids on 1 income. This is just a woman shagging younger men and sugar coating pain, it doesn’t capture the misery and loneliness that separation actually is. Plus every chapter is punctuated by “and we hear from my friend, expert so and so…”

Just what I needed

I started listening to this the weekend my ex and I agreed to separate. I knew of the scummy mummies and their approach to life and that Helen was divorced. The chance to hear how someone faced the end of an old way of life, a relationship and her identity as a married mother and turned it into a massive positive and time of self discovery was just what I needed. It has helped me understand and work through my grief of the end of our relationship and given me hope for myself and the future. Highly recommend.
It’s also bloody funny!!
