Sally Diamond cannot understand why what she did was so strange. She was only doing what her father told her to do, to put him out with the rubbish when he died. Now Sally is the centre of attention, not only from the hungry media and worried police, but also a sinister voice from a past she has no memory of. Story
A widely acclaimed international best seller, I'm Not Scared combines a coming-of-age narrative with a satisfying and spine-tingling story of suspense. A sweltering heat wave hits a tiny village in Southern Italy, sending the adults to seek shelter, while their children bicycle freely throughout the countryside, playing games and getting into trouble. When the gang find a dilapidated farmhouse, nine-year-old Michele Amitrano makes a discovery so momentous he dare not tell a soul.

Story
In this sweeping and powerful epic the journey begins in the "terrible beauty" of Northern Ireland during a time when conflict reigns and no one is spared from tragedy and sorrow, the time known as The Troubles. It is the spring of 1968 in Belfast and James Kirkpatrick has just lost his father under suspicious circumstances, Casey Riordan is released from prison after five years and Pamela O'Flaherty has crossed an ocean and a lifetime of memories to find the man she fell in love with as a little girl. All three lives are on a collision course with each other against the backdrop of the burgeoning civil rights movement and a nation on the brink of revolution. They come from disparate backgrounds - Jamie a wealthy aristocrat whose life is like an imperfect but multi-faceted jewel-brilliant, flawed and with a glitter that is designed to distract the observer. Casey, a card-carrying member of the Irish Republican Army, who must face the fact that five years away has left him a stranger, a misfit in his own neighborhood where not everyone is sympathetic to a convicted rebel. Pamela, who has come to Ireland in search of a memory and a man who may not have existed in the first place.

Enticing story of the persecution and endurance of women across time
Loved the characters, warmly drawn and individual. It did feel a little bleak that there was only really 1 male character who wasn’t monstrous. The voices were well done but I did find it very odd that a book so clearly set in Cumbria with a real sense of place made no effort to get the accents right. Alva was voiced by a Geordie and none of the other accents were even from the north west. The north is not all one place!!
A strong tale of female empowerment, with gripping and satisfying revelations throughout though.

Loved the echoes of Crawdads
Where the Crawdads Sing was my book of 2020, read during Lockdown, which is when I believe Emilia Hart wrote this book. I loved the echoes of Crawdads in this story, the relationships of females, which society labels as being different, to the men in their lives, and of course the insects and animals and nature.
I thought it was a clever interweaving of the generations and I loved how the author brought their stories together and the symbolism and situations that ran throughout the story.
Really enjoyed it and I recommend it.

Wonderful!
I absolutely loved this story and found myself completely immersed very quickly. The characters really come alive whilst their stories are being told. I loved the historical and geographical detail but most of all I loved the thread of empowering female strength that ran through, making it uplifting and joyful. Seeing women find their voice and strength despite being down-trodden and held back by men, kept the vibe of hopefulness running through. I found myself sneaking off to places where I could listen uninterrupted and was very frustrated if someone appeared and started talking to me, needing me to press the pause button! Wonderfully absorbing and the best thing I've listened to in ages, I feel quite bereft now it has come to an end....
