Summary

Black Swan meets Killing Eve—the brilliant new novel from Erin Kelly.

Swan Lake is divided into the black acts and the white acts. The prince is on stage for most of the ballet, but it's the swans audiences flock to see. In early productions, Odette and Odile were performed by two different dancers. These days, it is usual for the same dancer to play both roles. Because of the faultless ballet technique required to master the steps, and the emotional range needed to perform both the virginal Odette and the dark, seductive Odile, this challenging dual role is one of the most coveted in all ballet. Dancers would kill for the part.

Ava Kirilova has reached the very top of her profession. After years and years of hard graft, pain and sacrifice as part of the London Russian Ballet Company, allowing nothing else to distract her, she is finally the poster girl for Swan Lake. Even Mr K—her father, and the intense, terrifying director of the company—can find no fault. Ava has pushed herself ahead of countless other talented, hardworking girls, and they are all watching her now.

But there is someone who really wants to see Ava fall....

Interesting story

I have always loved reading Erin Kelly’s books but this audible version has been ruined by the narrator with her poor accents and grating over pronunciation. I will abandon this audible choice and read the book instead. Very disappointed.

Overall a good listen

I found this book a tough listen. The story is very good but this was spoiled for me by the narration. It was overly dramatic and sometimes every word was enunciated to extreme and was really quite annoying.

Fantastic

I've just listened to this in two days, I found it engrossing with plenty of twists. I enjoyed the narration, I thought it suited the book very well. it's one of the best books I've listened to so far this year. I haven't really come across Erin Kelly before so will be checking out her other books, I hope they're as good as this one

Ballet Story for Grown Ups.

Great plot which I did not guess, within a well researched ballet setting. Far more than a chick lit, the book raises quite a few moral issues and conflicts of early C21.
The author depicts physicality of characters and buildings so well.
Narrator is lumbered with a variety of East European accents, which she does her best to differentiate for various characters. I found her voices for older male characters difficult to follow. It took me a while to tune my ear into them but I am pleased I persevered.

Compelling Story

An absolutely compelling storyline. The backdrop of a professional ballet company combined with the intriguing characters meant I listened to this book in less than 2 days.

I only believe that the audible version is let down by the narration. Imogen Church is a great narrator and I usually gravitate to books narrated by her. I just feel she was not right for this particular novel, the way she portrayed some of the characters really grated with me.

Overall though the story won through.

a slow start but got into it

I enjoyed the story but it was too long. Perhaps the abridged version would have been better. Nevertheless, enjoyable, lots of twists that I didn't guess and some that I did. First chunk is way too long but stick with it.

Highly recommended

An intricately woven thriller embedded with fascinating details about the ballet.
A very well drawn collection of characters.
I was gripped throughout and satisfied at the end.

Enjoyable

Enjoyable right to the end to listen to. Worth my time. The characters are built in a way you don’t see coming.

you've got to be kidding me

there is little redeeming qualities in any of the characters. this book is not a thriller by any means. you go through "secrets" as they develope, rather than unraveling through suspense like most thrillers.
I typically enjoy this narrator, but I'm noticing there are about 4 voices she does throughout all books and one is quite pinching to listen to.
overall unimpressed and full ending

Loved it!

I love this author, especially as each book has a different theme. Imogen Church is just superb as a narrator, she really knows how to create the right mood. I'm sorry the book has ended, I enjoyed every minute of the 14hrs 21 mins!!!
