About this listen
Multimillion-copy bestselling author Wilbur Smith returns with a historical epic set in Africa.
South Africa, 1820
When Ann Waite discovers a shipwreck in Algoa Bay she is stunned to find survivors: a scarred sailor and a little boy. As the man walks away into the distance alone, Ann is left to raise the young child, Harry, in place of the baby she tragically lost at sea.
Disaster and hardship befall Ann and Harry, and desperation drives them into the path of the mysterious shipwrecked man once more. Ralph Courtney has recently escaped Robben Island with two fellow prisoners and is destined to seek his fortune at Nativity Bay, the fabled place about which his father told him stories.
But far from being a land of paradise, Ralph, Ann and their fellow settlers find themselves facing unfamiliar challenges. It isn't long before they learn their new home borders the Zulu kingdom, where the warrior king Shaka's empire spans the continent. When Ralph encounters King Shaka, it is only the beginning of a daring new adventure of loyalty and survival.

Truth is stager than fiction
All to often we are plagued by the same scenarios in life of running that far from our pasts that it becomes impossible to run any further ,friendships spawned from desperate circumstances, pacts made from no where else to turn …..penny less lawless and destitute and yet behind it all it ,there always seems to be those who carry the greater burdens and worse names are truer in heart in spirit despite what the surface and rumours may say …..Scarred blighted lost and broken life’s last grasp let go long before ..yet still the endeavours of fate and chance meet a willing spirit and where theirs life theirs hope and where theirs hope theirs a chance to love and never let go again …..Brilliant stuff 🫡🥳great read

A lost treasure
This is definitely one of Wilbur Smith's lost treasures. Set in deepest Africa and the kingdom of King Chaka. Full of action and the plot is brilliant. Loved it! It's a prelude to his other Zulu kingdom classics.

It wasn’t long enough! And what happens next!
An adventure that wends it way like a snaking African river - love, friendships, hardships, heroes - Wilbur & Tom haven’t left any of the ingredients out that we love in these stories but I didn’t like that it had to end - it wasn’t long enough! And what happens next? Please tell me there will be another book! Soon?! It’s excruciating!
