Summary
Fame and popularity breed envy in high places, and the adulation of the mob is fickle. They often take as much pleasure in tearing down the idols that they have grown tired of as they did in elevating them in the first place. It is safer by far to live unseen and unremarked, as I always attempt to do.
An ancient kingdom. An incredible destiny.
Taita is a humble slave, an expert in art, poetry, medicine and engineering as well as keeping important secrets. He is the most treasured possession of Lord Intef. Yet when Intef's beautiful daughter, Lostris, is married to the Pharaoh, Taita is commanded to follow her and swiftly finds himself deeper than he ever could have imagined in a world of deception and treachery.
But outside the palace, the great kingdom of Egypt is divided and in even greater danger. Enemies threaten on all sides, and only Taita holds the power to save them all....
The first audiobook in the epic Egyptian Series.

I couldn’t finish this book
I never return books but even at £2.99 I had to return this one. I had really high hopes for it but I just couldn’t listen to anymore. The narration was excruciating and the characters lacking in any nuance. The hero was very heroic, the beautiful girl was very beautiful, the clever man was very clever and the bad man was very bad.

A very good read/listen
Having been an avid fan of Wilbur smith for many years I took the opportunity of repurchasing river god now on audible having listen to taita and his mistress the story sounds anew and takes the listener back in time as if you are part of this story. I can thoroughly recommend anybody to purchase and listen to River God as it is one of the best stories that I have ever listened to.

No. Just....no.
I didn't get far into this one before I dropped it. The villain is a caricature - you can practically hear him twirling his moustache, which the Egyptians didn't wear. They lost me at the stage performance of the story of Isis and Horus - drama wasn't an Egyptian thing at all. I don't expect total historical accuracy, but this really jumped the shark for me. If you're going to do a historical setting, you should at least try to portray it something like how it was.

I just couldn’t finish this book.
I really persevered with this book but gave up. The narration was fine, the story left me groaning out loud, “Well of course you can write poetry, preform surgery, invent weapons, design tombs etc etc etc”. I honestly rolled my eyes continually.
I’m a magpie when it comes to audio books, I read anything & everything, biographies, fiction, historical novels but I couldn’t finish this book.

Superb - great story telling from Wilbur Smith
I love this book. I haven't read it for several years, but it is one of my favourites and I have read it several times. Set in ancient Egypt the story begins with an adventurous young man and a mischievous girl under the care of her slave Tiata - our story teller. The original trilogy, which has since been transformed into several episodes follows his life and trials whilst caring for his various charges. This book has twists and turns taking you through every aspect a slave has to do to survive in ancient Egypt during the course of his daily routine. He has to lie, cheat and put his own life on the line. Great stuff.

Loved it.
I really enjoyed this, and I know that if I had acctually read this book, I probably wouldn't have finished it.
Thanks to the wonderful narration by Mark Meadows, it was brought to life, a mix of Joe Abercrombie, Con Iggulden and Jeeves of Jeeves and Wooster fame, I know that may seem a little odd but give it a listen and I'm sure you'll understand.
Made me laugh and made me cry....a lot, be aware there are quite a few very descriptive moments where animals are hunted, caught in battles etc. That said, I can't watch Watership Down so take from that what you will. Go on, treat yourself.

Disappointing
I was very disappointed listening to this book. It lacked plot and intrigue. There were very few in depth character explorations. if you like me love ancient Egypt you are much better listening to Christian Jacq series Rameses.

No chapters
Great book but struggled to navigate as there are no chapters so you can only move at 30 second intervals or along a very long time line
