Summary
Even before he could move, the full realisation of what confronted him blazed in the Pharaoh's mind. This was the foul and loathsome thing that Taita, with his clairvoyant powers, had smelt in the air. The light was strong enough for him to make out every detail of the enemy he had loved as a friend.
The magic of the gods. The treachery of man.
In his long life, Taita has gone from slave to warlock, and now his wisdom and abilities are known throughout the kingdom. But even his immense skills cannot protect those close to him from the evil that lurks at the heart of Egypt: Lord Naja, self-proclaimed Regent until the Prince comes of age.
Taita must summon all of his formidable gifts to protect the true ruler, the young prince Nefer - grandson of Queen Lostris. As enemy forces join together to bring destruction to the whole land, it is no longer a matter of simple magic. To defeat the false Pharaohs, the gods and armies must share their powers with a mortal warlock....

My eager anticipation for this next volume in the series was certainly not disappointed. My attention was held throughout the amazing twists and turns of this dramatic novel and although I knew it would probably have a 'happy ending', the intervening story drew me in, capturing my imagination with satisfying, delightful escapism! So very well narrated!!!

A RADICAL departure from the First and Second Book
I wanted to like this offering, and the one after, but I will not finish The Quest. I'm returning it. I'm hoping to return this one because I thoroughly disliked it, and do not want this in my library. I am an armchair Egyptologist, and like historicity and if there must be mysticism, I like the mysticism light and ambiguous. Not unabashed and so forward that it's embarrassing to academically minded people. I realized Wilbur plays loose and fast with history in the first book, and does a bit of fun self-aggrandizement in the second. i will keep those, and enjoy those again. I want nothing to do with books 3 and 4 ever again. I hope to get my credit back, because I severely dislike both of these, and regret listening to them. I went against my better judgment listening to these. Let me emphasize that the narrator is STELLAR, and that if wild mysticism and magic are your thing, coupled with gratuitous descriptions of violence (which he has a marvelous gift for) this book will leave you enthralled.
What I appreciated in the prior book(s) was the margin of mysticism uncloaked by scientific explanation. The historicity got way, way worse, too. I was hoping the next book would redeem this one, but it was so bad from MY vantage point, I am openly hoping with great fervor that Audible will grant me the credits back. I don't like having books I loathe in my library. I will forever keep River God and The Seventh Scroll. I think they are masterpieces. For me, these later books are an atrocity, but I know some will adore them, for that audience, I wish them all the enjoyment in the world in reading it.
I don't mean to be a snob, I just take my favorite historical subject personally, and should probably attempt to write my own. I'll always have the first two books to enjoy. Peace and long life to the author and the readers.

Too much time on adolescent girls anatomy
This book is not as good as it’s predecessor, but that is almost expected when the first book of a series is as enjoyable as the first offering of this series. Some of the story dragged out quite a bit longer than it probably should have, as I began losing interest on occasion.
But the real issues I have are these: There is Farr too much time spent on the anatomy of adolescent girls. With descriptions of their.. well, everything. While I understand that the age of marriage were far different than what is acceptable today, there is no need to spend so much time on the curvatures, plumpness or ripeness of any body parts. It is cringeworthy and creepy and it occurs numerous times throughout the book.
The second issue I had with this book is not the fault of the author. This book is one single chapter that lasts the entirety of the book. I’m not sure why this is, as the first book was separated into over 100 chapters. Surely there could have been chapter markers placed here and there.

I’m in complete agony waiting for another credit
Well, Wilbur has ruined me for all other Egyptian literature. I don’t believe that any other series could possibly measure up to the masterpieces in this series. The character development is impressive, and the lessons will stay with me for a lifetime. It’s also lead me to fill out grad school applications to pursue a new path (the path I’ve always wanted to be on since childhood) in anthropology as a forty-year-old woman who currently works in Legal IT.
Thank you for the inspiration!!!!!

WOW FANTASTIC
If you haven’t read Wilbur Smith YOU NEED TO! I am so sad because I have now finished all of his series along with all but one of his novels. I’m saving that for an up coming road trip with my husband.
Mr. Smiths writing style is so very extraordinary, vivid, alive, I feel like I am a character in one of his stories his novels are so easy to melt into. I feel as though I can, smell the air, taste the salt of the sea, feel the stinging heat of the desert, touch the minerals and rocks, hike through the jungles, go on Safari, feel the splashing rain, smell the mineral iron smell of blood, ride a horse....I JUST DO NOT KNOW HOW TO EXPRESS HOW FABULOUS THESE NOVELS & SERIES ARE!
***THANK YOU Wilber Smith for sharing your stories with the world, I for one am richer for it.
