About this listen
Ever since her beloved Jed died, all Virginia wants is to be left alone. But the little girl who lives down the street is so sweet, that even in her grief-fuelled state Virginia’s heart softens whenever she sees her.
And that’s why Virginia knows there’s something wrong in the little girl’s house. So when the mother asks Virginia to take her child far away, somewhere safe, Virginia says yes.
The last thing Virginia would call herself is a hero. She’s just doing what anyone else would do, right? But when she realises how much danger the child is in, she knows she needs to do everything she can to keep her safe . . . Because sometimes it’s the most ordinary people who do the most extraordinary things.

Such understanding of so many emotions
I loved this audiobook which dealt with so many human experiences in a very compelling story. Thoughtful and sensitive writing - and the narrator was excellent too.

A dark but intimate story of maternal instinct and troubled childhood
As someone who comes from a challenging upbringing, this story brought to light the lengths you should go to protect the innocence and value of childhood safety. In this book, Rosalind has a way of writing that makes you feel warm and protected, but also faces the harsh realities of everyday families. With their complexities, hardships and grief. It was wonderful to read this book and delve into the characters individual lives and the range of voices she represents in this story. A must read.
