Summary
Lucy Entwhistle and Everard Wemyss, both recovering from recent unhappiness, meet and quickly fall in love. However, over their new-found bliss looms the spectre of Vera, Wemyss’s first wife who died in mysterious circumstances. After their wedding the couple return home and Lucy really does begin to be troubled by what happened to Vera. Considered a high-water mark by the author, the story is an extraordinarily black vision of a young wife who gradually begins to understand that her husband will accept nothing less than total intellectual and emotional servitude.

Vera
Vera is a very thrilling story written by the great Elizabeth von Arnim and narrated with excellence by Lucy Scott.

So powerful
This novel is dark and very different from The Enchanted April. Yet, both books are favourites of mine, with a strong focus upon characters. Great narration.

I expected something completely different.
This is a very early description of coercive control. It is quietly and delicately written and it’s a shame that the narrator hams it up - the wife is breathy and giddy, the husband is music hall villainous. I was expecting a Rebecca-type whodunnit but this is a very different book. Very enjoyable though.

Utterly depressing
I have read and listened to Enchanted April which I found to be an absolute delight. Deciding to read more from the same author I bought Vera. Sadly the novel was the total opposite. I listened to the whole story and was depressed from start to finish.

Story Spoilt by Narration
I had to stop listening to this as the narration was almost pantomime like so just couldn’t continue
