About this listen
The inside story of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine, from two of the leading scientists who created it. Fully updated with a preface and a new chapter.
This is the story of a race—not against other vaccines or other scientists, but against a deadly and devastating virus.
On 1st January 2020, Sarah Gilbert, professor of vaccinology at Oxford University, read an article about four people in China with a strange pneumonia. Within two weeks, she and her team had designed a vaccine against a pathogen that no one had ever seen before. Less than 12 months later, vaccination was rolled out across the world to save millions of lives from COVID-19.
In Vaxxers, we hear directly from Professor Gilbert and her colleague, Dr Catherine Green, as they reveal the inside story of making the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine and the cutting-edge science and sheer hard work behind it.
This is their story of fighting a pandemic as ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. Sarah and Cath share the heart-stopping moments in the eye of the storm, they separate fact from fiction, they explain how they made a safe vaccine in record time with the eyes of the world watching and they give us hope for the future.
Vaxxers invites us into the lab to find out how science will save us from this pandemic, and how we can prepare for the inevitable next one.

What a fascinating book
I can’t put into words just how much I enjoyed this book. The story behind the AstraZeneca vaccination and the important role of these two scientists was a pleasure and privilege to hear. Both women came across as extremely dedicated , level headed ‘normal’ human beings who were focused on the job in hand. Inevitably, there had to be some science in there but their explanations and analogies made it accessible to the listener ….. no high level science knowledge needed.
I have to compliment the two narrators who made the words come alive and kept me wanting to hear more.
An absolutely fantastic listen.

Fascinating!
I learnt a lot but it was not overly complicated. I often struggle with non-fiction but this was really good and gave great explanation of the process by which they made a vaccine for the world and why it is crucial.

Very informative
Really helped me to understand the hows and the whys. Great to hear what actually happened and how, from the people who created the vaccine. Lots of questions answered. Some of the science stuff went over my head 😃 but I will be listening again. Well told and well read. I think everyone should listen to this book in order to make an informed choice.

Well worth the read. Important.
Ignore all the covid naysayers who know nothing outside Ivor Cummins and Youtube, this is an extremely important book. Not only does it show how hard it is to create vaccines but also indicates the challenging short term contracts these experts work in. Getting funding is rare and challenging, their concerns about healthcare are ignored but they keep going. And they explain the complex science to the layman too.
Kudos.

A story of women sacrificing their health and well-being
Shocking
These women work so hard in an insecure environment
Why would anyone want to do this job & how can working conditions be vastly improved?
It’s not fair on them or their families

Excellent, inspiring and fascinating
I enjoyed this book very much. The voiceovers were excellent, capturing the warmth and humanity of the writing - especially Dr Green!
The science is well presented and although you will not be an expert through this book you will get a good overview of the work of two inspiring scientists and their teams. They are generous to others in the bioscience world in a way some (Fauci, Trump, Macron etc) might have done well to copy. Overall I highly commend this audiobook
