Summary

A captivating LGBTQ fantasy that blends the enchantment of Cinderella with the futuristic world of The Matrix, delving into questions about the nature of life, the pursuit of freedom, and the price one must pay for love.

Eke lives in a nice house, in a wealthy neighborhood, with an upstanding family: Mr. and Mrs. Kensworth and their three children. But Eke is not family–Eke is property. He’s an AI whose job is to keep the house clean and organized, and no matter how much Eke secretly wishes to be allowed outside to see the stars or to make a real friend, he’s either ignored or bullied by the family that owns him.

To make things worse, the Kensworths purchase a shiny new AI named Kyp, who quickly becomes everyone’s favorite, leaving Eke feeling more isolated than ever. That is, until a terrifying party incident brings the two AI together, sparking a chain of events that forces them to commit the unthinkable–defy human orders and run away.

With AI hunters hot on their trail, Eke and Kyp set out on a perilous journey across the country, fighting for their lives, searching for the true meaning of freedom, and even daring to fall in love.

An intriguing mix of LGBTQA romance and Sci Fi thriller

I was sent a copy of this book to review.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 I was intrigued by this book as AI is a hot topic at the moment and these AI were evolving/becoming sentient. I listened to the audiobook and the narration was perfect. As the plot flipped POVs from Eke and Kyp the narrator gave completely distinct performances for each character and truly brought them to life for me. It added depth to the plot and vibrant personalities to the characters.

The AI are servants to humans. Eke is not part of his human family, is kept separate and considered property. He is an older model and treated very poorly by his owners especially their son. He is a maid, and his life either involves being ignored completely or cruelly bullied when he does garner attention from the son. I instantly loved Eke as he was sweet, self-deprecating, filled with joy at the smallest things like flowers, was caring and carefree when pretending to be Buster Keaton. Then Kyp is brought home, who is premium level AI, and is treated entirely different. Kyp is well spoken, involved in household activities, and most significantly allowed to meet guests, something Eke is never allowed to do. Eke is excited to become his friend though Kyp keeps his distance too.

But Kyp is not as he seems and has a secret. When a party incident turns life threatening for Eke, the pair finally connect and agree to run away together, going against their programming and their owner’s rules. I loved their growing friendship and the slow unfolding of their backstories which showed the reader how they evolved into who they are and arrived at their current household. I wasn’t sure how the romance aspect of this plot would be portrayed but it was the most beautiful and innocent love story I have read in a while. As Eke and Kyp go on the run we finally see them share their feelings about life and what they long for in their future. I was swept up in their dangerous trek across the country looking for freedom and acceptance and I couldn’t help falling a little in love with them both as they fell in love with each other. Highly recommend.

Two queer AI absolutely stole my heart!

Us, Et Cetera was an absolutely beautiful read – I was totally engrossed, alternating between listening to the audio narration whilst commuting and reading the ebook when I could because I needed to know what happened next, and as quickly as possible. Who knew that two queer AI would absolutely steal my heart? Eke and Kyp are still living rent-free in my head!

This book is for everyone who has loved films such as I, Robot and The Matrix. It made me reflect on what makes us human. In this novel, it’s absolutely the AI who show the most empathy and compassion, whereas the Kensworth family doesn’t fare well by comparison: Mr Kensworth is a workaholic, Miss Elaina is obsessed with her status, and Carson is an outright bully and sociopath.

Eke was the sweetest character! I loved his obsession with Buster Keaton, and how he squirreled away items discarded by the family to keep as treasures. I wanted to scream at everyone directing hurtful remarks at him and was full out cheering him and Kyp on as they journeyed across the country, evading the AI hunters.
This is a story with lots of heart and substance - it takes a look at society and oppression that feels very relevant in today's world!

The narrator's performance was spot on - he used distinct voices for the two alternating points of view and the narration really brought the story to life!
