Summary

Dr. Liz O'Riordan is a breast cancer surgeon who has battled against social, physical and mental challenges to practice at the top of her field. Under the Knife charts Liz's incredible highs: performing like a couture dressmaker as she molded and reshaped women's breasts, while saving their lives; to the heart-breaking lows of telling ten women a day that they had cancer.

But this memoir is more than just an eye-opening look at the realities of training to be a female surgeon in a man's world. In addition to this high-powered, high-pressured role, Liz faced her own breast cancer diagnosis, severe depression and suicidal thoughts, in tandem with commonplace sexual harassment and bullying. And by revealing how she coped when her life crashed around her, she demonstrates there is always hope.

A fantastic listen

Loved every second of this honest recount of a surgeon's life which highlighted the complex lives led by these amazing people. A truly humbling and profoundly moving book which I would highly recommend to anyone.

Devoured this in 2 days. Loved it.

This was a fascinating account of navigating medical training, becoming a surgeon, living with cancer and major life changes. It is honest and sad in parts, but it has strong themes of resilience, triumph, compassion and joy.
The narration was great and well paced.

Brilliant!

A well written informative book which has been narrated in a manner keeping the listener engaged. Liz discusses her professional and personal path with her cancer diagnosis and the crossovers between.
Well done Liz. I "enjoyed" your book whilst knowing you have another journey to take. Any reader will have take aways from this book to use professionally or personally or as you indeed did - both. Thank you for being so open.

Time well spent listening to this book

This is an open and honest book, written from the heart. Liz, you are enough. Thank you for sharing your experiences. This book has helped me put the happenings in my own life into perspective.

Moving, funny and educational!

I found this book both moving and entertaining. I loved the author’s account of her career from junior doctor to consultant and the many ups and downs along the way. The second half brought back similar memories and feeling as a cancer patient myself but I loved listening to Liz’s story. It is beautifully and candidly written and I highly recommend it.
