Summary

Two stories about the uncertainties of attraction, from the acclaimed author of Normal People and Conversations with Friends.

'Mr Salary' is Nathan. Sukie moved in with him years ago because her mother was dead and her father was difficult, and she had nowhere else to go. Now they are on the brink of the inevitable.
My love for him felt so total and so annihilating that it was often impossible for me to see him clearly at all.

In 'Colour and Light', Aidan and Pauline watch a firework display together. They are almost strangers. But their stumbling connection pains Aidan more than any casual flirtation.
He now feels utterly confused as to why they seem to be arguing, confused to the point of abrupt despair.

I loved the second story best. I also loved the fact that the second story had a male narrator. I wished I knew more from the universe of the second story :) As in, I think I managed to get attached of the characters and the potential of their universe and history together and how it could come to be further.

Chapter 1 good, Chapter 2 difficult to follow

I liked the first storey but I really struggled with the speaker in the second storey, so much so I can’t really remember what the story was afterwards.

Chapter 1, the first storey and the person speaking was good and I enjoyed!

What was the point?

Mr Salary - 2stars
I felt very uncomfortable about the age difference and what actually was going on there? I also felt the ending was too abrupt.

Colours & Lights - 1star
Can I get back the time I spent listening to this?

Super short

I didn't realise before buying this that it was just over an hour in total. I felt one of the stories was really close to the plot of Beautiful world where are you. Don't think it was long enough to really rate or get in to.

Great stories

I love Conversations With Friends and Beautiful World, Where Are You. When I noticed that this book was available for £2.99, I decided to try it, and am glad I did. Highly recommended.

My personal opinion

Normal People was a good story, I didn’t like these ones. But that might just be me.

Short and sweet

Great writing and narration combined made for a positive experience, very enjoyable. Narrators were wonderful to listen to and conveyed the stories well.

Noticed some parallels with the second story and Beautiful World.

I always enjoy Sally's stories for depth and complex interpersonal relationships, whilst being stylistically uncomplicated and digestible.

More please

A brief foray back into the world of Sally Rooney’s writing. I loved the simplicity of each line, her writing is so delicate and cuts straight to the point. Looking forward to her next novel after reading these short stories.
