Solomon Northup
About this listen
Twelve Years a Slave is the true story of Solomon Northup: born a free black man in New York State, and sold into slavery after being tricked in 1841.
Unable to convince anyone he is not a slave, Solomon spent 12 years in bondage, before finally being set free.
Northup’s memoir, recounting details of the slave markets and the harsh life on plantations, was used in the struggle to abolish slavery in the United States.

Straightforward and compelling
Written in the formal language of the time in some ways makes Solomon Northup’s story even more tragic. It is the straightforward telling of his terrible story that makes it so compelling. It is of the time and gives a real sense of that scar on history.

Such a sad story!
What a journey! What a man!
I enjoyed this story, although I found the narrator's voice a little boring after time.
Still, I would recommend the read!

Movie not nearly as graphic!
Gripping, tragic and wholly absorbing, Mr. Jenkins rendition brings this story to an even more humanizing level.

Heartbreaking
It sounds strange to call it a beautiful book but there was such a gentleness in the way it was written and showed how he rose above the brutality he was subjected to and never let it change who he truly was. I really felt that I came to know Solomon. What an amazing man. So gentle, wise and compassionate. You need to listen to this book. It was so wonderfully narrated by Tommie.

A Cry freedom indeed
I enjoyed this book as much as the film. Slavery is an abomination. Great narration.
