Summary
All the light went out of Jake’s life when his older brother Caleb died in a traffic accident. Getting through the aftermath was always going to be the hardest thing he’d ever done, but finding out that the tall stranger at the graveside was the one driving the car? At least Jake now has a target for all the rage inside him. Because the man responsible for stealing Caleb’s light from the world has no right to intrude on their grief.
Liam had known deep down that it was a mistake to go to Tennessee, but he’d hoped saying good-bye to Caleb would ease the pain inside him. The hostile reception from Caleb’s family and friends comes as no surprise, and Liam flees before things get ugly. They obviously know nothing of Caleb’s life in Atlanta, and maybe it’s better that way. Caleb’s secrets can die with him.
When Jake turns up at Caleb’s apartment to collect his brother’s possessions, what he discovers is the first shock in what is to be a series of revelations, turning Jake’s world upside down. New knowledge brings fresh pain and anguish.
Jake isn’t the only one who’s hurting....

A BEAUTIFUL LOVE STORY
So many parts of this story had me tearing up, feeling frustrated at the injustice and rooting for Jake and Liam both.
To change seasoned views and prejudices in a backward town was not easy, when Liam met Jake they had never envisioned what was about to happen.
This was a beautiful story, told with great sympathy, l loved John Solo's southern twang a bit too much.

Small town story, their views of Love and colour are out dated and unrealistic in today's world. But these views have kept people from returning home after college. One such person being Caleb, Jakes brother.
At the start of this book I was close to tears for a few chapters, we see the struggle of a young man losing his brother and coming to terms with his sexual awareness. He meets people who knew his brother, his secret life away from Jake and his parents and he wants to find out more.
This is a beautifully written book about a young man's struggles but we get an HEA. Beautifully narrated too by John Solo. Highly recommend.

as good as the ebook
The story is always 4 or 5 stars, because if I wouldn't like the story as ebook, I wouldn't listen to the audiobook.
The performance from the narrator is also very important for me. I can't listen to a lot, because my English as a non-native-speaker isn't so perfect to follow a whole story over hours, when the narrator speaks too fast or too sloppy. Normally I have to SEE the person, who is talking to me in English. It took me a little bit, to come into the narrator, but at the end, it worked. I only have to take a few breaks between. I'm just not yet finish with the book, but I listen enough to give a review.
PLEASE READ MY RATING SYSTEM!!!

4* - very good and will be often re-listening

While I've read and listened to other books by KC Wells. I hadn't listened to John Solo yet. What a mistake that turned out to be. Fabulous story! Audible 4.25 stars
Audible review...
This was kind of a hard one to review. While I liked the narrator’s voice, occasionally I would get frustrated when Mr Solo would enunciate his words (in this case, he’d pronounce some words “properly” instead of casually as the average person would). I got used to it though.
Book review as posted on Amazon/Goodreads...
4.25-4.5 stars
This book was sooo beautiful! The feels... OH THE FEELS!!! While I love a good fluffy romance, I also love the stories that show heartache, anger, shock, desire, and yes, even some of the hate that still exists in the world.
I am a huge fan of KC's work. I think she has a way with words and a flair for storytelling. Her stories are well thought out and most of them are thought provoking and open my eyes and mind to real issues that still need to be addressed in today's society. This beautiful story reminded me that there are still small-minded people out there who think that the color of a person's skin or their sexual orientation should matter when it comes to someone else's relationship.
I was very glad that Ms Wells didn’t just gloss over the feelings and actions of the side characters. While some of them I did not like, others surprised me. This book has quickly become a favorite of mine. Thank you KC

The gut wrenching feels in this book were delivered straight to my heart. I’d previously read this book, but John Solo brought it to life. The loss, the exploration, the love. I really enjoyed this beautiful story
Truth and Betrayal is a beautiful story of love, secrets, bravery and bigotry. I admit I cried few times while listening to this story. Throughout the book there are some very heart-wrenching scenes written so well and narrated so beautifully that I was feeling Jake's pain and couldn't help it. I loved Jake and Liam, they are both strong and amazing characters, and I enjoyed following their relationship growing from strangers to falling in love. Narrator did a great job, I loved his voice for Jake and for Liam as well as for every other character in the book. I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy love stories with hardship, some angst and HEA.

Fluffy with family drama
I really liked this book. I got the audio and you can not go wrong with John Solo.
Jake's beloved brother passes away and leaves him devastated that he could never tell him his secret. All bc Jake was too afraid of how he would react. Unbeknownst to Jake, the reason his brother rarely came home to Lafayette from Atlanta to visit was because he held the same secret.
Liam was driving the car when the accident that took the life of his boyfriend of 4 years away happened. A black man showing up to a conservative small white town to the well attended funeral of his closeted (to his family) boyfriend has all eyes on him and he is quickly asked to leave when Jake turns all the blame of the death of Caleb on Liam.
With his mom and dad immersing themselves in church and work months after the funeral, Jake feels a little lost. He's tasked with going to clear out his brothers apartment 7 hours away when he arrives he's faced with Liam again. Caleb's "roommate". After the initial shock wears off, hatchets are buried and Jake leaves on good terms with Liam and numbers are exchanged. Jake takes Caleb's old laptop which Liam says Jake should probably have factory reset to increase the function of it but Jakes knows he doesn't have the heart and he wants to go through everything that's on it to get that connection to the brother he loved but barely seen for years. Jake wants to know what he missed out on. Turns out he was missing out on a brother who understood him more than he thought. There's no one he can really talk to that would understand the extent of his feelings. Well, almost no one.
Introducing Jake to the life Liam and Caleb lived is exciting and eye opening. Jake understands why his brother hardly ever came home. And going through this journals on the computer reveals how much love Caleb had for Jake and how bad he wanted to reach out. Liam finds out that the all consuming love he always wanted is right in front of him. Liam's family loves Jake and Jake loves them but when a friend brings up questions to Jake about weather or not Liam may be trying to replace Caleb with Jake insecurities reck havoc on Jake and crushes Liam. But working out their issues is just half the battle. The other half is Jake's family that not only one son was scared to come out to but two. To have a full relationship, Jake has to step up and risk it for Liam.

Not So Different Afterall
Caleb's death gave Jake the courage to live. These two brothers were so close, but Caleb hid his true self from his own family including Jake. It wasn't until after his death that Jake was able to find out who his brother had truly been through Liam. One thing is for sure Jake would have never had the courage to be with Liam if Caleb hadn't have died.
This story is heartbreaking, yet uplifting at the same time. It was beautifully written and narrated. It's definitely worth the listen/read.

A Beautiful Story!
Truth & Betrayal is book 1 in the Southern Boys series. I love this beautifully written, true to life, tragic, emotional, sweet, slow burn, coming of age story about being gay and in an interracial relationship in the South. It's sad that the scene in the cemetery still happens today. Liam just wanted to pay his respects to Caleb, his boyfriend, but was turned away and told he didn't belong there. Honestly it's no wonder Caleb didn't spend much time with his parents, especially after he and Liam got together. After Caleb's funeral his younger brother Jake went to his apartment to pack up his things. That's where Jake found out that Liam was Caleb's roommate, and later his boyfriend. I think it was Jake's curiosity about his brother that had him wanting to spend time with Liam, their friends, and even Liam's family, a place he became comfortable. Jake had to tell his parents about him and Liam and I was a little worried about the out come of that conversation. His parents did surprise me though. I love that Jake and Liam ended up together. They really are good for each other. I just love the cover of this book. Definitely recommend and definitely one to enjoy again.
Narrator John Solo does an amazing job.
