Summary

'I pulled off my glasses and wiped my eyes. "That was perhaps the last race of my career...."'
Deep down, Mark Cavendish thought he was finished. After illness, setbacks and clinical depression, the once fastest man in the world had been written off by most. And at the age of 36, even he believed his explosive cycling career would fade out with a whimper. The Manxman hadn't won a single Grand Tour stage in Italy, Spain or France since 2016.
But then came his incredible resurrection at the 2021 Tour de France. Included on the Deceuninck Quick-Step team at the very last minute, only after Sam Bennett suffered an injury, Mark set about rewriting history. He claimed back the green jersey he first wore in 2011, and his four stage victories finally saw him matching Belgian legend Eddy Merckx's all-time record of 34 Tour de France stage wins. Cycling greats are never content, and Cav's dogged determination and inner strength had earned him the record that few believed he could ever achieve. This is his own intimate account of that race, right from the saddle of the miracle tour.

A great listen
Mark was my first true sporting hero. I remember watching him on TV at the 2014 and 2015 editions of the race when my Dad first got me into cycling- especially the Tour. I’d go out on my bike after watching the day’s racing and sprint up and down my road, pretending that I was the Manx missile on the Champs-Elysees.
It was amazing to hear about his experience leading up to and at the 2021 Tour- the highs, the lows, the funny stories and the camaraderie and bond he shared with the team that still believed he could pull out one of Sport’s greatest comebacks. His road to recovery- the setbacks and trials he faced and the hard work, will and determination he put in to get back to the top is an inspiration to anyone.
If that’s the last of Cav at the Tour, thanks Mark. Your were an inspiration to me and I’m sure thousands of others. But I hope we see you again, crossing the finish line for win number 35. Either way, Chapeau Cav.

Amazing Cav
I enjoyed this so much. Stage by stage of Cav's amazing achievement equalling Eddie Mercyx's record winning 34 stages at the Tour de France 2021. Cav is a great narrator as he explains the way the Tour works, his personal battles and the highs and lows of his cycling career. His love for the sport is palpable.
He talks about his family in such a warm and loving way. There's a young Cav in the making in his son. Perhaps one day we will be hearing about his experiences in the Tour.
I will be listening to this again very soon.

Loved it!
Having Mark narrate his own book really made it special.
He tells it how it is, and you can hear his passion and excitement in his voice which totally draws you in and adds another aspect to the book. Superb!

Cav in a nutshell
Absolutely loved this, didn't want it to end. I've been a fan of Cav since he first burst onto the scene, loved his no crap attitude and his obvious talent from the get go.
Really liked the insights of what it's like day in day out in the peloton for us non-professionals to appreciate those hard days where sprinters "just" have to get through in the time limit.
A genuine fairytale when you consider he was a whisker away from never racing again (no contract, etc) to equalling the most stage wins in the Tour.
Great story and made all the better by being read by Mark himself, the greatest sprinter of all time. Loved his thoughts on other riders too. One handed wheelies anyone?
If you like cycling, the Tour or just elite sport in general it's a must read / listen

Great experience for lovers of cycling.
Normally it's not a good idea to let the writer narrate his own story, but with this book, hearing the true joy and sadness in Mark's voice is half the experience. Very touching. One or two of the stage descriptions could have been left out, but the overall experience is a truly good one.
