Summary

Penguin Presents the audio edition of The Secret Cyclist, by The Secret Cyclist, read by Ben Eagle.

Who is The Secret Cyclist and why all the secrecy?

'Every public aspect of our lives is so tightly controlled that being truly honest is all but impossible in a newspaper interview, never mind a whole book. You try to write a warts-and-all blog about your office. Question how the business is run, make sure you remember to call your boss a moron, and then tell me how it goes.'

He's ridden for World Tour teams for 10 years. He's achieved top 10 finishes in Grand Tours. He likes coffee. These are just a few details about the professional rider who wants you to know what the view looks like from the centre of the peloton.

What do the riders really make of Team Sky? How does the pay structure work? Why should you never trust a kit endorsement from a professional? Is doping still an issue? The Secret Cyclist tackles the big questions head-on, revealing a side to cycling that fans have never seen before.

Doesn't contain any secrets

These anonymous accounts are a vehicle for revealing all the sensitive, secret and potentially unacceptable aspects of a sport or profession which couldn't be revealed on the record. In this sense they are really important, one only has to consider the secret barrister in this regard.

But in my opinion this book doesn't do that at all, particularly on the issue of doping. Therefore I feel that it fails totally and is not the book it implicitly purports to be. Could not have been more disappointed.

No benefit from being anonymous

interesting book but the author fails go into any real detail and offers the same old doping arguments "everyone was doing" "it didn't make that much difference" and even "if they got rid of everyone involved in doping there would be nobody left".

unsecretive, unsurprising and contradictory

clever marketing strategy to hook the cycling fan into purching the book only to inform them about what they already know. absolutely nothing new here, today and I bet even when this was published. wasted credit for me though! having just listened to JV's autobiography prior to this, I find this book devastating. The author hasnt revealed anything that i had not known myself; and I am not even a hard core cycling fanatic!! he has cleverly capitalised on mystery here but gone on to reveal nothing I couldnt get from cyclingweekly. i would not recommend.

Not Too Many Secrets

The anonymity could have been used a lot more. Secrets about pro cyclists, sponsors, equipment….. What bike, groupset, tyres etc would you use if not encumbered by sponsorship? What happens at the world champs when it’s the one day when they race as national teams and not trade teams? Is trade team loyalty really suspended for one day? Anecdotes about the good and bad DSs. Alliances between teams during grand tours? Still an enjoyable read, but more of a revision of what’s already known, rather than revelations. Perhaps the anonymity and the motivation behind it is more of a gimmick to convince the reader that they’re receiving inside info. A journo/swanny/mechanic could impart a very similar tale to a ghostwriter.
