Summary

The short-story collection from Irish bestselling author, musician and comedian Blindboy Boatclub.

You don't fully appreciate how large a donkey's head is until it's beside you in a Fiat Punto. The view in my mirror was furry and violent. I was driving blind.

Driving with a donkey stuffed in the back seat; jackdaws pecking brains out through the roof of a confessional box; cat piss and astronauts. This is the world not as you see it, but as it is, twisted from the maverick mind of Blindboy Boatclub.

These are stories of the strange unsettlings in the souls of men caught in between the past and the possible; stories of heart-blinding rage and disquieting compassion.

Taking its title from a twelfth-century English manuscript of the same name, which dehumanised the people and culture of Ireland to facilitate domination, Topographia Hibernica is a collection that unravels the knotted threads of humanity, nature and colonisation from a contemporary Irish perspective.

Called 'one of the most gifted writers of his generation' by the Irish Times, Blindboy Boatclub is the essential voice for the Irish condition in the twenty-first century. Topographia Hibernica is his unmissable short-story collection.

laughing, crying, shouting in the car

I was so unsure whether I wanted the hard copy of the book or to hear Blindboy's narration but hearing his accents and reading style really made this book an incredible experience. From crying at a donkey, to yelling "NO BLINDBOY" behind the wheel of my Corsa, to chuckling at tea bags in pockets, this book has made me take the long route home for the last week so I can hear an extra bit of each short story. Ten out of bloody ten. Thank you.

Such beautiful writing

The author’s voice comes through so strongly in his writing, a unique and utterly engaging view on the world. It’s incredible how a Blindboy story can move me to tears, unsettle me and make me laugh within a few paragraphs. Blindboy’s writing excites and inspires me. Please do yourself a favour and get this book, and try his other writing.

What a wordsmith!

Best set of short stories I’ve read in years. BlindBoy has such a beautiful way with words. Absolutely brilliantly narrated by author too. I will certainly be re-listening to this very soon

Incredible opera

I have now listened twice. His best work to date hands down. Utterly hilarious and heartbreaking in equal measure - genius.

Worth a listen

While I was not a fan of all the stories there is definitely enough quality there to earn a recommendation, Especially the stories in the latter half of the book.
The audio book is well read and Blindboy's excellent podcast skills translate nicely towards an ability to deliver a very intimate and pleasant audio book narration.

Visceral, unsettling, beautiful

I couldn’t wait to read this book. The podcast is a staple for me and Blindboy’s words are always so illuminating. The book was a brilliant read but I must say, all of the stories left me with feelings that were hard to deal with. Each one feels like being wrapped in a warm blanket but now and again, you’re drenched with a bucket of ice water. I cried for days about the little boy and his fur-lined boots and the kittens… don’t even talk to me about the kittens. Blindboy’s storytelling is so rich, so visceral, his way with words is exceptional. But the beauty is tempered with so much that’s disturbing and uncomfortable. He’s a truthteller but thoughts of entropy, fear, shame and emotional violence are a shock to the system. It’s a stunning book, just make sure you’re sitting down before you open it. Five stars.

Exquisite short story collection from the uniquely talented Blind Boy

I absolutely love this collection of short stories by Blind Boy. Read beautifully by the man himself.

The Pistils of The Dandelions is a stand out story. Beautiful prose, perfectly told.

Wonderfully absurd and thought provoking

Can’t say enough good things about this, the imagery is astounding and the score adds wonderfully to the overall feel of the fantastically irreverent stories to the point that some of the stories are anxiety inducing but in the best possible way.

Well read, captivating and humourous

If you've listened to Blindboys podcast each week as I have for a long time, some of these stories will be familiar. They have been built upon, but I've heard the main storyline before on the podcast. A definite improvement on his previous collection and I hope for more to come in a couple of years
