Brilliant, couldn't stop listening
I've been reading a lot of catholic material lately from the popes of the last 150 years on social teaching. It's very eye-opening and I figured vatican 2 had a lot to do with it.
Indeed it did. Vatican 2 didn't happen out of nowhere. It began really with Pope Leo 13th in the 19th century (personally I think he's a saint).
From then on, the Church struggled to find her place and her mindset in relation to a very modern world. Pope Pius the 9th and St Pope Pius 10th seemed to sort of hinder things here, but Pope Pius 12th was more open to the modern world.
But St Pope John 23rd and St Pope Paul 6th were the definitive answer with their involvement in Vatican 2. The book explains everything you need to know about it all. The run up to Vatican 2, the Council itself and all the main teachings of the Council.
It's an excellent summary and put A LOT in place in my mind about everything related to this event and the present direction of the Church.
I'm definitely a supporter of this amazing Council and I think it's the answer the Church needed.

Fabulous book, disasterous narration
George Weigel's book on Vatican II is a revelation, placing the council in its historical context and analysing its continued impact. The brilliant writing is only slightly marred by the terrible narration (with frequent heavy-handed overdubs). I will definitely re-read this book in one format or another, but wish it had a different narrator.
