Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The audiobook of Thud is narrated by impressionist and actor Jon Culshaw, best known for BBC Radio 4’s Dead Ringers, and for the Doctor Who audiobooks and dramas. BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning actor Bill Nighy (Love Actually; Pirates of the Caribbean; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) reads the footnotes, and Peter Serafinowicz (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace; Shaun of the Dead) stars as the voice of Death. Featuring a new theme tune composed by James Hannigan.

'FOR THE ENEMY IS NOT TROLL, NOR IS IT DWARF, BUT IT IS THE BALEFUL, THE MALIGN, THE COWARDLY, THE VESSELS OF HATRED, THOSE WHO DO A BAD THING AND CALL IT GOOD...'

In the city of Ankh-Morpork, tension is rising between dwarf and troll communities.

A dwarven fanatic has been stoking the flames of an old hatred born of the Battle of Koom Valley -an ancient war between the races that neither side has quite got over. When the dwarf is murdered, with a troll the only witness, Commander Sam Vimes of the City Watch must solve the case before history repeats itself.

With his beloved Watch crumbling around him and war drums sounding, Vimes must unravel every clue, outwit every assassin and brave any darkness to find the solution. But darkness is following him...

And at six o'clock every day he must go home to read a bedtime story to his son. There are some things you have to do.

Thud! is the seventh book in the City Watch series, but you can listen to the Discworld novels in any order.

The first book in the Discworld series - The Colour of Magic - was published in 1983. Some elements of the Discworld universe may reflect this.

Good but a couple of niggles with the narration

As a Pratchett fan I do love this book BUT I was disappointed with some of the narration. Don't get me wrong, Jon Culshaw is good but I felt he completely chose the wrong voice for A. E. Pessimal and had him talking in a very deep, low, slow voice and manner when he was supposed to be a small man with a small voice. And even when Pessimal shrieked loudly "Come on if you think you're hard enough!" Culshaw ruined that hilarious moment with his deep slow voice for him. It went completely against what Pratchett himself wrote. Also, I think Culshaw's voice for Brick was dreadful, that's just my own personal opinion though.

Another excellent tale.

For me, Jon Culshaw will always be the voice of the Watch. His depictions are spot on, allowing you to visualise the characters... especially Nobby Nobbs. And is it just me, when I hear Sam Vimes I picture Sean Bean...???

Fantastic performance. Good story but not his best

Somehow not as funny as many of his stories and fewer twists. But a lot of clever ideas as always.

Brilliant reading

A fantastic interpretation of the characters in one of Pratchett’s best Vimes’ stories. Culshaw is excellent. Well worth listening to, even if you’ve read or listened to the story before.

An awesome range of voices

The brilliance of Terry Pratchett deserves brilliant narration…and finds it. I have long been in awe of STP as a writer. I am again in awe of Jon Culshaw too, and his awesome range of voices. These new City Watch audiobooks are excellent. (Michael).
