25th August 1957. The island of Spinalonga closes its leper colony. And a moment of violence has devastating consequences. When time stops dead for Maria Petrakis and her sister, Anna, two families splinter apart and, for the people of Plaka, the closure of Spinalonga is forever coloured with tragedy. In the aftermath, the question of how to resume life looms large. Stigma and scandal need to be confronted and somehow, for those impacted, a future built from the ruins of the past.

Story
Beneath the majestic towers of the Alhambra, Granada's cobbled streets resonate with music and secrets. Sonia Cameron knows nothing of the city's shocking past; she is here to dance. But in a quiet café, a chance conversation and an intriguing collection of old photographs draw her into the extraordinary tale of Spain's devastating civil war. Seventy years earlier, the café is home to the close-knit Ramírez family. In 1936, an army coup led by Franco shatters the country's fragile peace, and in the heart of Granada the family witnesses the worst atrocities of conflict.

But it's the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute take a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant Nobel-prize-nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Summary
The gripping new novel by Sunday Times number one best seller Victoria Hislop is set against the backdrop of the German occupation of Greece, the subsequent civil war and a military dictatorship, all of which left deep scars.
Themis is part of a family bitterly divided by politics and, as a young woman, her fury with those who have collaborated with the Nazis drives her to fight for the Communists.
She is eventually imprisoned on the notorious islands of exile, Makronisos and Trikeri, and has to make a life or death decision. She is proud of having fought, but for the rest of her life is haunted by some of her actions. Forty years after the end of the civil war, she finally achieves catharsis.
Victoria Hislop sheds light on the complexity of Greece's traumatic past and weaves it into the dynamic tale of a woman who is both hero and villain, and her lifelong fight for justice.

Lived up to expectations
Having read all of the authors previous books , the story didn’t disappoint , as always a mixture of dark light, historical events that make you feel quite ignorant of events that took place in my lifetime.
I was drawn to the listen because of the narrator, however, for me this was the only downside , perhaps she was suffering with a cold, but heavy breathing and very a nasal quality was quite distracting , especially as I listen with earphones

Another outstanding novel from Victoria Hislop
Like all her novels Victoria Hislop has not disappointed us with her latest novel. I have experienced a compelling insight into the Greek culture and Greek history.
The narration however was very disappointing and off putting. The continual sound of her breathing made for a very bad recording. I would have returned this audiobook if the story had not been so good.

Superbly powerful story and so well narrated. A story you simply can’t stop listening to. I enjoyed it from start to end and learnt so much about Greece’s political history too. Such an incredible tale and so tenderly narrated, it surely must be an award winner.
