Summary
A funny, biting, and entertaining memoir of coming of age in the shadow of celebrity and finding your own way in the face of absolute chaos that is both a moving portrait of a complicated family and an exploration of the cost of fame.
Growing up, Jenny Pentland’s life was a literal sitcom. Many of the storylines for her mother’s smash hit series, Roseanne, were drawn from Pentland’s early family life in working-class Denver. But that was only the beginning of the drama. Roseanne Barr’s success as a comedian catapulted the family from the Rockies to star-studded Hollywood—with its toxic culture of money, celebrity, and prying tabloids that was destabilizing for a child in grade school.
By adolescence, Jenny struggled with anxiety and eating issues. Her parents and new stepfather, struggling to help, responded by sending Jenny and her siblings on a grand tour of the self-help movement of the ’80s—from fat camps to brat camps, wilderness survival programs to drug rehab clinics (even though Jenny didn’t take drugs). Becoming an adult, all Jenny wanted was to get married and have kids, despite Roseanne’s admonishments not to limit herself to being just a wife and mother.
In this scathingly funny and moving memoir, Pentland reveals what it’s like to grow up as the daughter of a television star and how she navigated the turmoil, eventually finding her own path. Now happily married and raising five sons on a farm, Pentland has worked tirelessly to create the stable family she never had, while coming to terms at last with her deep-seated anxiety.
This Will Be Funny Later is a darkly funny and frank chronicle of transition, from childhood to adulthood and motherhood—one woman’s journey to define herself and create the life she always wanted.

Nepotism baby’s self pity party
This seemed like a whole lot of self pity. Blaming everyone around and a made up family curse. I don’t have much empathy for nepotism babies. ‘Struggling’ while her famous mommy is offering a house in Manhattan Beach and getting her jobs in the industry. Beyond tone deaf. Also…her tone of voice was so monotone and boring. The only thing that drew me in was the cool book cover. This will be funny later…I’m still waiting to laugh.

What a ride!! Jennie Pentland's Memoir
Written and narrated by Jennie Pentland, daughter of famed TV Star, Roseanne Barr, Jennie shares her experiences growing up in the midst of emotional and psychological upheavals in the lights and shadows of a multi-year sitcom. How she currently navigates the circumstances of her past and copes with the present demands of her own motherhood and family life is relatable, and often incredible! Her keen intellect, a sharp wit, and creativity emerges from an author who has compelling stories to tell worthy of a listen. Be ready for the ride, fasten your seatbelts, and prepare for surprises, shock, delights, humor, horror and insights from the floodlights of Hollywood to the farm on Hawaii. I look forward to her next book!

simply a stellar book.
This was the best book I've read while going through a divorce, sorting out my childhood trauma, moving across the country, Solo parenting a high needs child, and navigating pandemic. Jenny's story is so relatible and she does a marvelous job of telling it in such a hilarious way. My inner child, my inner teen, and my current adult self want to be her friend. I cried when I finished this book, comma not only because it was touching, but because it was over.

So good!
Jenny Pentland’s funny, insightful and sometimes sad memoir was wonderful. I had seen her in Your Mom’s House and was charmed by her interview there and further charmed by her book. Ms. Pentland has overcome a lot and has done so with a lot of forgiveness and lack of bitterness.

Extreme of hits and misses
The first third or so was utterly an disposable account of an unremarkable childhood. It's a shame because in celebrity memoirs, this is often the best part. It's much more predictable and unrelatable after their famous. Here it's the opposite. After Rosanne got famous is where Jenny Pentland's life went bonkers.
Narration is also hit and miss. She's very much not a performer and long passages can go by where she's struggling and you're bored. On the other end of the extreme, there are parts of her story that no one could tell better than herself.
An unexpected highlight was a chapter only a few minutes long of her reading her biting tweets. Way more memorable than such a thing has any right to be.
