Summary

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

From “weird, scary, ingenious” (The New York Times) stand-up comedian Maria Bamford, a brutally honest and hilariously frenetic memoir about show business, mental health, and the comfort of rigid belief systems—from Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People, to Suzuki violin training, to Richard Simmons, to 12-step programs.

Maria Bamford is a comedian’s comedian (an outsider among outsiders) and has forever fought to find a place to belong. From struggling with an eating disorder as a child of the 1980s, to navigating a career in the arts (and medical debt and psychiatric institutionalization), she has tried just about every method possible to not only be a part of the world, but to want to be a part of it.

In Bamford’s signature voice, Sure, I’ll Join Your Cult, brings us on a quest to participate in something. With sincerity and transparency, she recounts every anonymous fellowship she has joined (including but not limited to: Debtors Anonymous, Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous, and Overeaters Anonymous), every hypomanic episode (from worrying about selling out under capitalism to enforcing union rules on her Netflix TV show set to protect her health), and every easy 1-to-3-step recipe for fudge in between.

Singular and inimitable, Bamford’s memoir explores what it means to keep going, and to be a member of society (or any group she’s invited to) despite not being very good at it. In turn, she hopes to transform isolating experiences into comedy that will make you feel less alone (without turning into a cult following).

Hilarious, warm and deeply relatable

This book is filled with a candour and warmth that made many of its darkest themes feel safe to explore and examine.

I laughed aloud often, and felt seen, heard and communed with in some of Maria Bamford's most difficult moments and experiences. The entire chapter "I killed God" broke my heart (I'm tearing up even now). Her stories about her family relationships were poignant and funny and real.

Maria Bamford is gifted, and hearing her read it is absolutely an amazing format through which to experience this book.

A honest assessment of Mental Health.

The most glorious way to talk about personal mental health. While a very serious and painful subject, Maria tells her story in such a way that it makes, me a fellow mental health sufferer, feel ok with who I have been and will be. Thank you Maria, I loved it. X

Get your cult membership card!

If you’re unfamiliar with Maria Bamford this book is like being hazed into the Bamford Cult. And you’ll never want to leave.

Her performance is as expected; hilarious, dynamic, provocative and with a dash of pathos.

As far as getting “shitty mental health advice” goes - this is the best there could possibly be. Thank you Maria for your words and lols.

Funny, pacey and thoughtful

I’d never heard of Maria Bamford but I love comedian’s memoirs, and this came recommended. Once I got over my initial aversion to the style (very American, ‘zany’, silly voices, several knowing tropes etc) I really enjoyed it. Maria has some truly hilarious anecdotes and turns of phrase, a real insight into some extremely challenging metal health problems (and the politics around them), and an ability to weave these into an entertaining story.

Mentally Hilarious

It must be exhausting being Maria Bamford. Extremely honest and very, very funny. This is one of those audio books in my library that will get multiple listens.

Love her and her book

Funny, interesting and surprising. I enjoyed spending time with Maria. Fascinating hearing more back story to her family and the stories from her famous bits.

Relatable

I've no idea what this book would be like if you're mentally well and have never been a part of the 12 step movement. As a crazy person this book was incredibly relatable, with me shouting yes quite a bit. Even down to the way the words god and him were pronounced in the bit more explicitly about the steps at the end. Funny and moving. I will definitely listen again.
