We strive for success, but we are rarely happy. The more we try to win - putting on a brave face for work or family - the more we risk losing ourselves. And even reaching our goals can feel strangely hollow. The culprit? Fear. It makes us anxious, or shameful, or turns us into perfectionists. We pretend to be someone else while aiming for a status that’s never truly satisfying. There is another way. A way to find our true voice, to win on our own terms.

Every marketer tells a story. And if they do it right, we believe them. We believe that wine tastes better in a $20 glass than a $1 glass. We believe that an $80,000 Porsche Cayenne is vastly superior to a $36,000 VW Touareg, which is virtually the same car. We believe that $225 Pumas will make our feet feel better, and look cooler, than $20 no-names... and believing it makes it true.

Disappointing, simplistic US-style self help dressed up as insightful science
- By Amazon Customer on 31-10-17
Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
Narrated by Seth Godin.
Number one Wall Street Journal best seller & Instant New York Times best seller.
A game-changing approach to marketing, sales and advertising.
For the first time Seth Godin offers the core of his marketing wisdom in one compact, accessible, timeless package. This is Marketing shows you how to do work you're proud of, whether you're a tech startup founder, a small business owner, or part of a large corporation.
No matter what your product or service, this audiobook will help you reframe how it's presented to the world, in order to meaningfully connect with people who want it. Seth employs his signature blend of insight, observation, and memorable examples to teach you:
- How to build trust and permission with your target market.
- The art of positioning--deciding not only who it's for, but who it's not for.
- Why the best way to achieve your goals is to help others become who they want to be.
- Why the old approaches to advertising and branding no longer work.
- The surprising role of tension in any decision to buy (or not).
- How marketing is at its core about the stories we tell ourselves about our social status.
You can do work that matters for people who care. This audiobook shows you the way.
Critic reviews
"This Is Marketing is a very accessible way into Godin's thinking...Godin writes in pacy, jargon-free prose and this book is interesting and useful for anyone who wants an insight into how, and why, we buy things or change our habits in any way." (The Financial Times)

Generous as always
I’m a fan of Seth’s work already, so this is a nice culmination of everything he’s done before.
The main emphasis I feel, is in its underlying spirit of generosity. Specifically, he encourages that characteristic from start to finish. This alone makes it different to other marketing books, including the many I expect Seth has read himself in coming up with his own take on it.
It’s rare that I ever get an audiobook on the day it comes out, but this time, I did. Perhaps this highlights Seth’s career path: be generous, and you’ll likely get some back in a truly natural way.
Thanks Seth. You made a ruckus.

I am quite hesitant in giving 5/5 reviews...
...but putting my bias towards Seth (all his works align with my values) I'd like to give you a short and concise decision making help with "should I listen to it or not?".
I was skeptic a little due to the fact that I know what Godin's preaching is and wasn't expecting much novelty, but man I got pleasant surprise! It's one short and packed production, even more valuable than other books of Seth. You can easily listen to it on x1.25 or x1.5 without distorting voice too much, which is another benefit (great voice delivery that works for multiple listeners). Quite a fresh content which sits on shoulders of giants (known knowns) but somehow feels like "eureka".
Pleasant from very start to very end and it was probably the first of Seth's audiobooks that I finished so fast and was really sad it ended so quick. Very much valid insights, up to date and still ahead of time on many levels!

Exceptional introduction in the spirit of marketing. Whilst not rich in the nuts and bolts and how-tos, Seth initiates the reader into the Spirit of marketing, constructing the internal necessary attitude and fundamental understanding that is the bedrock of good, efficient and moral marketing. A must read/listen for anyone who wants to grasp marketing at a deeper level!

Go for the physical book instead.
In all honesty, if it wasn’t for the great content of this book and the solid material Seth had put into it, I would’ve never finished it. But I did finish it eventually because I cared a lot about the content.
I love when authors narrate their own book since it has that personal touch to it. But in this case, Seth’s voice could use some vocal training or voice coaching to beat that steady, low-tuned, slow-paced rhythm that puts listeners to sleep, and instead bring that energy, tone and varying pace to get listeners to want to hear more of that gold content. I’d still prefer that over hiring a different person to narrate the book.
So if you want to make the most out of this book, buy the hard copy instead and you’ll thank me later.
Nonetheless, thanks Seth for making this book and for the great content you put into it. It really gave me an eye-opening perspective into marketing and I truly appreciated it.

In itself the proof of Seth's perspective
I'm an avid listener of Seth's podcast, Akimbo, and was glad to find that everything he talks about on his podcasts is also discussed on his book — There is nothing new in the book! Is that a problem? Not at all! It's just proof that Seth truly lives his own philosophy on marketing. He generously offers his knowledge for free in his podcasts and, as he suggests in his teachings, people like me will be happy to purchase a souvenir from those they respect and admire. I'm proud to have this beautifully written book on my (digital) shelf. Seth's perspective on marketing is inspiring. Seth is a remarkable human being. Thank you for your work!
