Absolutely spectacular!

I'd already read the print version of this book, and frankly had my doubts about how well it would translate into an audiobook. But Vic Mignogna and his team of literally dozens of narrators did an amazing job. An absolutely wonderful listening experience.

Although the ending credits -- after you've listened to the full 28 hours -- give you the names of all the narrators, what parts they're reading are not specified. But part of the joy of this production is that so many of the actual people involved in the production of The Original Series lent their voices to this; also wonderful is hearing so many of the accomplished actors from Vic's STAR TREK CONTINUES production reading parts of this. So, for the record, here's the full cast list; you'll enjoy this even more knowing who is actually speaking!

Most Comprehensive Making Of TOS Series Out There

Have been a fan of the "These Are The Voyages" series of book since they came out a number of years ago. So pleased Season One is finally on Audible. Have read a number of making of books over the years and these are the most comprehensive books on how the original series was created I have ever read. Some major highlights for me:

1) Gives you a great birds eye view(no pun intended) of the writing process and how the final scripts for each episode came to be. The Author uses actual memos showing how Gene Rodenberry and others would submit their early drafts of each script and often re-write them. Enjoy seeing earlier renditions of the episodes and how they would differ better or worse then the final product. For example, "The Man Trap" in an earlier draft has the salt vampire begging to be given enough salt to survive and promises to never harm another human. Despite that Kirk decides to kill the creature, but later regrets it. This was all changed of course, but such a treat to see such examples of these early versions. This also gave me a renewed appreciation for Gene Rodenberry and how involved he was in these re-writes adding continuity to the series.

2) Walks you though the daily production diaries going over what scenes were filmed on what day and what challenges would come about. This approach makes me feel like I am there with the cast and crew experiencing the magic coming from the hard work of all involved in real time.

3) Includes commentary from a wide range of those involved including the actors, directors, producers, writers, even the lighting director and more. Having so many varied voices from so many involved presented for each day of each episode filmed is so amazing for lovers of TOS.

In addition to the quality and comprehensiveness of these books, having this first one on audible is such an amazing way to experience this book. Most of the story is read by Vic Mignogna who as many may know is responsible for the "Star Trek Continues" fan films (If you have not seen those I would recommend checking them out) Not only does he do a superb job
of narrating but this audio book includes an incredible amount of sections read by the actual people responsible for TOS. Also included are voices from many of the actors from "Star Trek Continues" reading parts of "McCoy, Scotty" and others.

Vic on facebook has said that whether there will be an audiobook for Season 2 and Season 3 depends on how well this audiobook sells. Hope it will sell enough to warrant all three books since in my opinion there has never been a better set of books on everything that makes Star Trek the Original Series my favorite.

Fantastic

This is one of the best (possibly THE best) books on Star Trek ever written. The large cast does a fantastic job narrating the book. I hope there will be a volume 2 and 3. My best audiobook purchase in ages.
THIS NEEDS TO BE LISTED UNDER STAR TREK BOOKS .... I am afraid that Trek fans don't even know this exists.

If you're looking for a behind the scenes look

In depth look at the production of Star Trek TOS 1st season on an episode by episode basis. Great for those of us interested in the real details. It's a great listen!

Great behind the scenes chronicle and great narration. I really hope they do audiobooks for the rest of this series and more like it for newer Trek productions.

This was captivating. I am a huge Star Trek fan, and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this Audiobook. I can't wait for seasons 2 & 3 of TOS!

Educational and Interesting!

I enjoyed every minute of These Are The Voyages. It gives an interesting incite into 1960's Hollywood and the television industry at the time. This is a must listen for all Star Trek fans!

Narrator Vic Mignogna has a wonderful voice and it was fun listening to him do some of the other characters such as Ricardo Montalban. It was truly a labor of love for him. I also enjoyed hearing some of the original people who worked on the series. Highly recommended!

Loved the show, loved this book.

An excellent study on how 1960’s television worked, how to produce a series and how the internal workings of the best science fiction show to ever make it to the little screen, both the good and the bad. Erases some of the myths and creates a few more.

The surprise for me was that the ratings for the first season were much better than we have been told. It appears that the network’s problems with the show were more with Roddenberry and the costs than with low ratings. Thank God it survived long enough to make it into syndication.

As a first grader in 1971 I can still remember the excitement of seeing these stories for the first time and playing Star Trek with my friends on the school playground. Learning how it was all put together was a fascinating listen and made me actually want more.

Great description of early Trek

The history of early trek with lots of details how they had a pilot, then a second pilot, the Lucille Ball connection, the stars, the writers, and the drama.

One draw back: not a fan of Vic Mignona. He does a smarmy JT Kirk imitation. Haven’t liked him since the online series Star Trek Continues. Even before the Me Too drama.

If they do volumes 2 and 3 I hope they find someone else to narrate.

Star Trek a ... hit ?

So, it's been like since Star Trek came out that I have read nearly anything about it and this is the first publication that mentioned the AC Nielsen ratings. Star Trek history has always been stated like " the show never made it with the public" and it made history in reruns but now, we know the truth, a minor miracle happened with this show as it hit rather largely from the first airing. It stands a mystery why NBC treated a hit so poorly and then tried to kill it by placing it in a poor time slot...well, we have the next book to unearth some of those facts. Superlative book...
