Summary

Drawing from reams of historical data, laboratory experiments, field research, and eyewitness accounts, this comprehensive guide is the only book you'll need to face the greatest challenge mankind has ever encountered. Granted, you probably already know that skills such as wilderness survival, leadership, and basic first aid are important when fighting off hordes of the undead.

But The Zombie Survival Guide doesn't stop there, teaching you how to: Identify cases of infection by the zombie virus, Solanum, and recognise the hourly progression of symptoms: 'Hour 8: Numbing of Extremities and Infected Area, Increased Fever [103-106 Degrees], Increased Dementia, Loss of Muscular Coordination'; choose the right weapon: 'A Section of Lead Pipe Will Work for a Single Encounter but Is Too Heavy for Those on the Move'; defend your home: 'A Ten-Foot Cinder-Block Wall, Reinforced with Steel Rods and Filled with Concrete, Is the Safest Barrier in Both Class 1 and Class 2 Outbreaks'; and much more.

The Zombie Survival Guide is the only guide you will need to survive a most certain pandemic.

"Ignorance is the undead's strongest ally, knowledge their deadliest enemy," Brooks writes. "Personal choice, the will to live, must be paramount when the dead begin to rise. The choice is up to you."

not a natural audio book

I love the concept of the book as a zombie apocalypse instruction manual but it dosent work well as an audio book. Listening to it can be a bit of a struggle as the narration can be a bit dry and as it's written to instruct you it can be a bit hard going to listen to for any length of time. It's what I call a toilet book, something you can dip in and out of for a short period of time. Not so good for your long trip to work. Buy the physical book, it's great but don't rush to by the audio version.

Enjoyed it as a book, tedious as an audiobook

I enjoyed it as a book but for some reason it just drags on as an audiobook. Something about it being read out loud makes you realise how ridiculous some of the "advice" is. The narrator isn't too bad, his voice suits the subject and he has a degree of gravitas.

Skip to chapter 18 to avoid listening to long lists of weapons, or vehicles that are frankly I found I kept just tuning out and stopped listening. 18 onwards are at least some kind of narrative and story for the end of the book.

My advice is read it but this version audio version? No probably better to save your money.

I didn't realise how......

inferior chain-link fences are compared to walls until I listened to this book. This is worth reading/listening to before World War Z, but to do it the other way around wouldn't spoil anything.

Detailed and extensive

Was The Zombie Survival Guide worth the listening time?

That depends on if the zombie apocalypse actually happens. I'm sure that if zombies begin to take over my town then I will be really glad that I spent several hours listening to the book.

Any additional comments?

This is a comprehensive guide, it leaves nothing out. If you read this then you will be fully equipped to deal with the zombie apocalypse, saying that, you may not be able to finish it in time. The book is long, or at least it seems that way because it isn’t very engaging. I read it right to the end but I struggled to keep my attention on the words. The information within is brilliant but extracting it, not so great.

Interesting but outlasts its welcome.

Would you try another book written by Max Brooks or narrated by Stephen Hogan?

I do not think there was any problem with the narration, it is just that the book is more like reading an instruction manual and can be very dry going at points.

What could Max Brooks have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Inter spliced some of the 'after action reports' within the instruction section of the book.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

No problem with the performance, it was more likely the nature of the book that does not work as well as a traditional work of fiction when it comes to enjoying an audiobook.

If this book were a film would you go see it?

I can't imagine how this would work, but if they did I would see it out of interest.

Any additional comments?

Interesting and has many 'wow I didn't think of that' moments. However, the entire book is just a little dry and emotionless to be a truly enjoyable listen.

A great well written guide to the end times.

If a zombie horde comes a knocking this is the book of choice to get you through the bad times.

Great companion to world war z

I was a bit put off by some other reviews but i greatly enjoyed the book.
The narrator pulled of the dry wit and authoritative manner of an instructional manual.
There isnt a plot to be found but if you've ever daydreamed about having a zombie plan then this might be a fit for you, it goes into great detail about pros and cons of certain approaches and feels authentic.
Maybe too dry for some but i geeked out the whole time and now im ready to take on the undead and survive.

Average

I found that I could not finish the book, I found it very bland and senseless, but I had expected so, it is a Guide after all: no story, no new or interesting concepts, just a guide.

Narration is also average.

Enjoy

Almost too believable

Max Brooks writes this guide in a straight a fashion as could ever be imagined. He give credibility to the possibility of a zombie virus and offers practical advice on how to deal with it.

It is so well thought out and described in intimate detail that you cannot help but be chilled to the bone.

A wonderful piece of fiction...or is it?
