About this listen
The adventures of Dorothy in the Land of Oz. Thanks in part to the 1939 MGM movie, it is one of the best-known stories in American popular culture.

Good story but poor narration
What did you like best about The Wonderful Wizard of Oz? What did you like least?
It's fascinating to read the original story after being so familiar with the film versions. The story is imaginative and quick paced and there are some interesting differences with the films
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
Turn it into a film! This is one of those rare occasions where a good story has been turned into a great film (Fight Club being another notable example), and in some ways the story reads more like a screenplay as it quickly jumps from one scene to the next without much backstory or narrative detail. The story is also darker in some places than the film (I don't remember the Tin Man beheading 40 raging wolves in the film!)
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Alan Munro?
There are so many good male voice actors out there - pick any one! The narration was fine in some parts, but in other parts was distractingly stilted, with emphasis in all the wrong places, as though it was being read by a computer. I don't know if this is the fault of poor editing or the narrator, but it ruined the book
Do you think The Wonderful Wizard of Oz needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
There was a good follow-up film 'Return to Oz'
Any additional comments?
This is an interesting story, though more of a fable. But the best thing about the story is that it provided the inspiration for the film

better than the film
I had often only caught snippets of the film, so when u had the opportunity to listen to it, in its original form, I had to hear the story...glad I did, much more interesting than the film version

Bad
2023 52 Book Challenge - 33) A Banned Book
Watch the film. It'll be more entertaining than this book, and Dorothy will be infinitely less annoying.
