'Magical in every way' – EOIN COLFER
When Fionn Boyle sets foot on Arranmore Island, it begins to stir beneath his feet ...
Once in a generation, Arranmore Island chooses a new Storm Keeper to wield its power and keep its magic safe from enemies. The time has come for Fionn’s grandfather, a secretive and eccentric old man, to step down. Soon, a new Keeper will rise.
But, deep underground, someone has been waiting for Fionn. As the battle to become the island’s next champion rages, a more sinister magic is waking up, intent on rekindling an ancient war.
Critic reviews
"The Storm Keeper's Island will blow you away.... A magical new voice in fantasy. Wise, warm and wonderful." (Eoin Colfer, author of the Artemis Fowl series)
"So magical and wild that it's like being swept away by the sea... She's taken an ancient story and found something new and bold and wild in it - I think only real bone-deep writers and storytellers do that. I can't wait for the next." (Katherine Rundell, author of The Explorer)
"Funny, dark and blazingly beautiful, The Storm Keeper's Island is a thrillingly inventive adventure." (Kiran Millwood Hargrave, author of The Girl of Ink & Stars)

Fantastic, imaginative & very well read
I love this story. It's full of imagination and intrigue. The narrators voice was perfect for it with his soft Irish lilt and character's voices. Just brilliant!

Mystical, magical and memorable
Listening to this was such a pleasant experience. I'm twenty seven and I've never stopped loving "children's" books, toys or activities. I feel like I can appreciate those things from both an adult's and a child's perspective, meaning I can gain multiple kinds of joy from them.
Catherine Doyle's writing weaves intricacies together into a tapestry of multiple elements, layers, emotions and experiences. Although she may overuse metaphors and similes, the imagery created using these literary techniques paints gorgeous, colourful and emotive scenes you can see clearly in your imagination.
The Storm Keepers Island blends old, Irish magic with original concepts in a way that feels innovative and exciting. Candles are a very traditional aspect of many different types of magic, which Doyle manages to breathe new life into, melding them seamlessly with the magic of memory.
Doyle approaches some difficult themes (deteriotive illness, death, mental health) in ways that explore the lack of understanding and control an individual has in those situations. I feel its important for children and adults alike to come to terms with our powerlessness in controlling those things and the coping mechanisms we can adopt to help us, which I feel Doyle explores concisely but well.
Patrick Moy's narration was absolutely gorgeous. His lilting, Irish accent brought an element of old storytelling to the book. I felt both lulled and exhilarated listening to his soft voice breathing life into Arrenmore and it's people.
I'm so excited to read the rest of this quartet and to find out more about Arrenmore and it's secrets, powers and inhabitants.

An exceptional piece of writing
Myself and my family (children 8 and 11) loved every word of this immaculately well composed happy-sad story and can't wait to listen to the next one. The narrator brings the story and characters to life si well. A joy to listen to.

Classic magic
The book is classified under young adult, but this old adult enjoyed the gentle magic and excellent narration very much! This would make an excellent book for grandparents and grandchildren to listen to together.
I enjoyed how there is a definite feeling that Fionn's story will continue, but no crude cliff - hanger tactics alluding to yet another endless series. A very satisfyingly contained story.
The magic feels just right, and the goodies and baddies are well differentiated but not simplistically so.
I almost wish there was a series - but not quite.

Magical, poetic, gripping, wonderful
I listened to this with my 10 year old and we were entranced. A wonderful story - beautifully written with such evocative poetic language. An exciting story that is perfectly paced and very well narrated.
The story is now set up for book 2 and we wait eagerly for its release.
