Summary
When Fionn Boyle sets foot on Arranmore Island, it begins to stir beneath his feet....
Once in a generation, Arranmore Island chooses a new Storm Keeper to wield its power and keep its magic safe from enemies. The time has come for Fionn’s grandfather, a secretive and eccentric old man, to step down. Soon, a new Keeper will rise.
But deep underground, someone has been waiting for Fionn. As the battle to become the island’s next champion rages, a more sinister magic is waking up, intent on rekindling an ancient war.
Critic reviews
"The Storm Keeper's Island will blow you away.... A magical new voice in fantasy. Wise, warm and wonderful." (Eoin Colfer, author of the Artemis Fowl series)
"So magical and wild that it's like being swept away by the sea... She's taken an ancient story and found something new and bold and wild in it - I think only real bone-deep writers and storytellers do that. I can't wait for the next." (Katherine Rundell, author of The Explorer)
"Funny, dark and blazingly beautiful, The Storm Keeper's Island is a thrillingly inventive adventure." (Kiran Millwood Hargrave, author of The Girl of Ink & Stars)

Classic magic
The book is classified under young adult, but this old adult enjoyed the gentle magic and excellent narration very much! This would make an excellent book for grandparents and grandchildren to listen to together.
I enjoyed how there is a definite feeling that Fionn's story will continue, but no crude cliff - hanger tactics alluding to yet another endless series. A very satisfyingly contained story.
The magic feels just right, and the goodies and baddies are well differentiated but not simplistically so.
I almost wish there was a series - but not quite.

Brilliant - can’t wait for the sequel
This was entertaining on so many levels. Catheryne Doyle has spun a yarn as rich & deep as Celtic mythology and as accessible to modern sensibilities as Harry Potter is . Like all heroic tales of good versus evil, some aspects are predictable- but this does not make them ring any less true or any less moving. Patrick Moy’s narration on Audible makes it doubly good. It’s a perfect bedtime or rainy day story for young and old alike. My only regret is that I can’t cue up the next installment this very instant. (Netflix has sadly ruined my ability to defer gratification. I’ve become Roald Dahl’s Veruca Salt. I want it NOW!).
