I found the romantic element too drawn out, with too much "in their head" descriptions. And the recrimination element after their wonder engine encounter didn't really tie with the personalities from the first book. The ending could have been shortened by a good few chapters.
There were a couple of other elements that really annoyed me, like what the heck was that rosemary/allergy thing supposed to be? It was completely random, didn't advance the plot and just seemed like a random way to have brought the Paladin on board for the story in book 1. It was almost forgotten about in book 2 other than being presented as a simple "allergy" response, rather than a magical effect. And not even reliably - how did she manage to get so close to the Paladin without any further reactions?And those darn tattoos - their effect seemed pretty minimal. What happened to them? Why did they kick off at the slightest errant thought at the start (book 1), and then remain dormant during some fairly mission-threatening hijinks during book 2? It might be a small thing, but it spoils a story for me when elements are introduced and then forgotten.
But I'll still give 3 stars because I really like the character of Learned Edmund!

I really love the team of unlikely heroes, their mission, even the pending threat facing Slate for returning to Anuket City, however all these elements take a bit of a back seat in Book 2, where I found Caliban and Slate's pining for each other overpowering the story, it kind of damaged some of the ground work laid in Book 1.
Book 2 has a twist I didn't see coming but Caliban and Slate's dynamic had started giving me the ick by that point, and I didn't appreciate how that still managed to dominate even when more eventful things were taking place. Slightly disappointed just because Book 1 was so enjoyable.
