Summary

The haunting story of the mother of the Tudors, Elizabeth of York, wife to Henry VII.

Beautiful eldest daughter of Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville - the White Queen - the young princess Elizabeth faces a conflict of loyalties between the red rose and the white. Forced into marriage with Henry VII, she must reconcile her slowly growing love for him with her loyalty to the House of York, and choose between her mother's rebellion and her husband's tyranny. Then she has to meet the Pretender, whose claim denies the House of Tudor itself.

Read by Sarah Feathers.

Conflicting, and repetitive.

I actually quite enjoyed this book overall, however there were some discrepancies. Henry VII and Elizabeth of York famously had quite a loving marriage despite the circumstances in which it began, though I didn't get that impression at all through the book. It seemed that as soon as they found a connection/love, they had an argument and it was ruined for months, only for this pattern to be repeated constantly throughout. However, I did think Gregory's portrayal of Henry VII as extremely paranoid about the stability of his reign and the loyalty of those who surrounded him very realistic. I can't imagine he wouldn't have had these constant ups and downs considering the manner in which he came to the throne, and found this to be a fresh perspective. Overall, a good book by Gregory, though in terms of character relationships I have to say this is one of the rare instances where I preferred the TV adaptation.

Well told story

I enjoyed this immensely, having an interest in the monarchy.
The story was well told and easy to visualise as it developed. If I have one fault with it, it is that it ended too suddenly with the rest of her life left untold. Despite this, I would recommend the book.

The White Princess

This book would have been better if it had been subjected to some serious editing.

Entertaining taste of history

Having little time for novels it's lovely to listen to something entertaining with a true historical taste. Assuages my guilt. I can relax but still feel I'm learning something. My 12 year old daughter loves it though we have to monitor certain "bits ". If your wanting a relaxing holiday listen ..This is your book !.

Enjoyable from start to finish

I found this book fascinating as it was clear that game play was certainly always at present. I really enjoyed an insight to these historical figures.
It was very well read

Sad but excellent

A brilliant take on the lost princes and the reign of Henry VII seen through the eyes of Henry's wife, a York Princess. It may or may not be what actually happened but it gives a great sense of the times and their uncertainty. Beautifully performed and constructed.

HERstory rather than history

The story of Elizabeth of York, raised as a royal princess. She survived the deaths of her father, brother and uncle, all Kings of England. She married Henry Tudor, and became Queen of England bearing a new royal dynasty. This is a novel, not historical fact. Some learned historians have disliked the author's interpretations of events where there is an absence of evidence. I liked this fictional story. I was surprised at my feelings of heartbreak at the end, with the executions of a couple of young alleged pretenders to the throne. The deaths reminded me of current times - of the unfair state executions of young people around the world today. The audio performance was excellent - I can only imagine Henry Tudor's accent like this from now on. I will listen more about these times.
