About this listen

The border between Maine and Canada is porous. Anything can be smuggled across it: drugs, cash, weapons, people. Now a group of disenchanted former soldiers has begun its own smuggling operation, and what is being moved is infinitely stranger and more terrifying than anyone can imagine. Anyone, that is, except private detective Charlie Parker, who has his own intimate knowledge of the darkness in men's hearts.

But the soldiers' actions have attracted the attention of the reclusive Herod, a man with a taste for the strange. And where Herod goes, so too does the shadowy figure that he calls the Captain. To defeat them, Parker must form an uneasy alliance with a man he fears more than any other; the killer known as the Collector....

Another great story

Never disappointed with the Connolly - Harding combo. Charlie Parker's world opens up further in this instalment.

Amazing

How can Connolly keep it ocult but so realistic still? I loved it so much, it’s the best crime series I’ve ever read, written in the best English and incredible amount of research. And Jeff Harding irreplaceable as ever *****

Love this series!!

I cannot recommend this author and the Charlie Parker series highly enough. The characters are so alive you live every moment with them. Heaven help anyone who interrupts when I'm listening. I have to say though that Jeff Harding makes any book come to life, there's been many an author I've loved but can't listen to because of the narrator. I think Jeff could read me a shopping list!!

Brilliant, peculiar and disturbing.

The Charlie Parker series isn't my usual fare. Jack Reacher or Elvis Cole types usually flip my switch, but John Connolly's books are curiously compelling.

Some of the stuff in the series is standard detective novel gear. Louis seems to be borrowed from Hawk in the Spencer books, and Angel gives brief comic interludes. The underlying evil of the bad guys, however, leaves the reader both abhorred and intrigued.

The whisperers, superb.

Well what can I say, As a fan of John Connolly books, and having read the majority of his previous books, I found this one to be excellent, However being a newbie to audio books I did wonder if I would enjoy it as much as his previous text based books I had read. Initially I struggled as the voice of the narrator came on I felt unsure as it’s quite alien to an adult to be read to these days!! However after the first chapter I was completely hooked, I soon got used to the American accent and Jeff Harding was superb at bringing the different characters to life. In fact I think I enjoyed it more than if I had read it myself! The story was well paced, John Connolly has a knack of making all his characters very interesting and believable, and he paces the story well to a very exciting and suitable end. I actually sat in my car many times (I love listening in the car to take the monotony out of driving) for longer than I should have as i didn’t want to stop listening!! I have already purchased the next of his audio books in anticipation for the next adventure.

Its a good read, more of a filler of a story to help with the journey of charlie.

truly amazing read

What did you like most about The Whisperers?

As usual, John Connolly has readers/listeners on the edge of their seats, Charlie Parker is such a believable character who leaps from the page.

Have you listened to any of Jeff Harding’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Jeff Harding is the perfect narrator for Charlie Parker, have only listened to one of the series that was not narrated by him, and I did not enjoy it as much.
