Summary

A Warhammer Horror audio drama.

On a world cut off from the Imperium, towering spires are lashed by endless rain. As citizens flee from the drowning city, a sadistic Imperial interrogator seeks a lowly data-drone with a terrible secret. But when disaster strikes, the pair must rely on each other for survival as the Watcher in the Rain awaits them.

Listen to it because: Hear a world in peril, with a magnificent soundscape acting as the backdrop to a thoroughly frightening tale of two enemies forced to work together against a darkness that will consume them both.

The story: In the far reaches of Imperial space, a ferocious warp storm approaches an Administratum world, cutting off the entire planet from the rest of the Imperium. As their towering grey spires are punished by endless rain, countless administrators, tithe-masters, and book-keepers are forced to evacuate. Among them is Greta, a lowly data-drone with a terrible secret, wanted for questioning by the sadistic Imperial interrogator Stefan Crucius. As disaster strikes and the pair are left stranded in the depths of the drowning city, captor and captive must cooperate to stand any chance of escaping. But a mysterious presence stalks them through the abandoned, flooded towers, a dread entity each must confront but which neither dare acknowledge, a Watcher in the Rain.

Written by Alec Worley. Running time 74 minutes. Performed by Matthew Hunt, Deeivya Meir, Melvin Rawlinson and Richard Reed.

Wonderful Warhammer horror!

This was a wonderful listen!
performance is great and the story was captivating till the end.
It isn't a horror story with a few 40k trivia tidbits, no felt perfectly true to the 40k universe.
A perfectly plausible scenario that could have happened, right up until the twist ending.
wonderful tale, truly! I wan't many, many more like this!

An excellent, atmospheric slice of 40k horror

A superb example of what can be done with the genre in the 40k setting. Plenty of twists and standout moments crammed into an hour, well worth a listen!

More of a dark thriller

Overall the book was really good and only correction is that the book was “dark/creepy” but less in a horror sense but more as a thriller and enjoyed the plot.

Damn!

I don't usually listen to 40k books but I gave this one a go on recommendation from Adaptus Ridiculous. I was right to do so, even if for the cost of a credit the run time isn't great.

The production quality is brilliant and if there was a series of these done at 3-4 hours a book I'd be all over that in a heartbeat.

The story is very grimdark, as always in the far future of the 41st millennium. But the characters are very well done, the urgent pace of the plot keeps your interest at all times and the ending is just perfect for this type of story.

Overall a great little listen from start to finish.

An ending that made me shudder!!

I throughly enjoyed this story, I enjoyed the premise of being left behind on a slowly drowning world, there’s something bleak and incredibly terrifying about the ocean especially an alien one, there however wasn’t enough of the watcher enough so that I knocked a star off I’m afraid.

The ending though that got that lost star back through it made me audibly shout no!!!, it’s so bleak it’s amazing.

I feel like everyone who’s a Warhammer, horror or Lovecraft fan (Lovecraft fans may be disappointed however) should listen to this book.

This is proper horror!

I feel I just had to write a review on this little gem of an audio drama. The story, the voice acting, the effects. All excellent. What I admired most was how tight it all was, nothing unnecessary but still didn't feel like anything was missing out. It also had many elements very specific to the Warhammer 40.000 universe, so in other words the story couldn't easily if at all exists in any other setting. Very depressing story though so if you can't stomach those, then look elsewhere.

Good Horror Story

Loved this audio drama. Dark and dire! The voice casting, sound effects, and music all contributed to a great listening experience. The Watcher in the Rain is a great addition to the Warhammer saga as well as a chilling tale.

Wow

Really gripping audio drama. No chaos, no xenos, just the Imperium battling itself. Highly recommended.

All good except for the very end

There were lots of layers in this, which was surprising for something 74 minutes long. Good performances and ambiance.

The very very end was bad. It felt moralistic, like there was some sort of "cummumpance" that had to happen. It didn't, and took away from an otherwise enjoyable story.

this was well done. . .

The Black Library horror selections are really very good.

This particular work has multiple different turns in the story which ALL pay off.

I am not a fan of audio dramas so much, but the voice acting was well done and well edited.

I bought this book as something to listen to on a long flight. It has NOT disappointed!

Can’t get enough

Although I found a few loose ends in the plot, they were immediately overlooked by the story and the world being revealed before me. A truly gripping and enthralling chapter in what I hope to me more soon to come.

A well-written yarn with an excellent twist!

A terrific story filled with dark, oppressive ambiance.
It had the sort of classic, dark, creeping horror of Lovecraft, Poe, Serling or Hitchcock, where even if you see the twist coming its evolution keeps you (the reader) happily engrossed.
The voice actors are superb too (as usual)!
Highly recommended!

Outstanding! Truly.

Very much enjoyed this one. Not overly long with detail(s) which aren't necessary nor scenes dragging on. And not too short either. Difficult to say details at all about the story itself due to possible spoilers. So I will not. Be sure to keep your ears and attention to the story. (; Very cool. Truthfully, better than some straight up action 40k novels I've read.

Absolutely wonderful

While the beginning is a little slow, the finale is wonderful! I wish it could have been a little longer to focus on the “Watcher” some more.
Can’t wait for the next book by Worley!
