A Beautiful and Gorgeous book
This book was completely different from what I normally read, but I’m so glad I did. It gave the horror, tenderness and love of the WWI. The relationships between the characters were strong and poignant, especially between Freddie and Winter. The narrators made each of the characters believable and added a certain tone to each of them. There was one moment in the book, that got me so much I nearly cried; it was written and handled beautifully and heartfelt. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in trying something a bit different, and to enjoy it for what it is.
A Immaculate book and brilliant story!

I personally thought this was a wonderful book.
The story captured that time so perfectly. This book was so well performed by both readers Yes, this was upsetting and depressing, but also a wonderful atmospheric story, the horror of it all was all there. I must admit I lost quite a lot of sleep over five nights, as I couldn't stop listening, for me that's the sign of a great book. This is just my personal opinion, we are all different. Thank you for a great story, even though it was set in such a horrible time.

A deal with the Devil
Although it’s set against the backdrop of WW1, this story about a young woman trying to save her brother from somebody who maybe a fallen angel is well told and rather low key. I liked all the characters even Faland, the villain of the piece.

Interesting but a bit odd
It was an interesting story but a little odd at times and never really got who or what Fallond was and Pim’s story. I would recommend listening to some of it as I really struggled with Freddie’s accent. Wasn’t quite what I expected from the story synopses that I’ve read

Every chapter evokes emotion and atmosphere
I really enjoyed this well told story following Canadian brother and sister Laura, a nurse, and Freddie a young soldier as they precariously fight to survive with both their sanity and freedom through the physical and emotional horrors that haunt them whilst serving during WW1. Believable characters and a story with its own respectful twists and surprises despite the familiar historical setting .

A really unusual book
I really love Katherine Arden but I must admit that it did take me a little while to get into the story, hence the 4 ⭐️ (which should really be 4.5). However, it’s really worth your while persevering with it; I ended up really enjoying it and wishing it wasn’t finished so quickly. A very unusual book with great characters.

Like nothing I ever read before. Beautiful.
This is nothing like her other books. It does capture atmosphere in the same magical way as The Winternight trilogy, but the atmosphere is a different one. Honestly, I really loved it. The ghosts, the characters, the hope and the reality of wartime loss. I especially liked Winter and Jones. Try it - she’s a great writer!

painful
The story is so miserable and even though it fits the theme of WW1, nothing is holding my interest. I couldn't care less for the sister and the brother's story is very slow, but it is simmering to something. It's just not soon enough.
I had to DNF. Very disappointed in the story. The narrators are good though.

There are six hours left for this to pick up the pace and become enjoyable but I’m in my 50s, I don’t have time to wait. Just not my thing
