Summary

The waiting room stands on a crumbling railway platform at the edge of a retired rock star’s vast estate. Abandoned to dereliction and isolated by a moat of thorny wilderness, it used to be a playground for his children. Until strange music and the terrifying spectre of a leering soldier frightened them away. Julian Creed is TV’s most popular ghost hunter. Only his small production team knows he is a complete fake who doesn’t even believe in the paranormal. Until he spends one night in the waiting room.

Review: "The Waiting Room" by F.G. Cottam

This is one of those books which I used to tide me over until my Audible credit arrives tomorrow. It was enjoyable enough, but I've already forgotten half of the characters' names. I likes the Wilfred Owen references as I'm a fan of his poetry...but later on in the book his ghostly echoes become heavy-handed and end up taking you out of the creepy suspense of the tale. It wasn't a total loss. I think I paid £5.99 for this on sale and it was worth that. If I had spent my monthly credit on it though, I think I would have been disappointed.

Entertaining to listen to

I've recently had to drive long distances and having never read/listened to any horror or ghost stories before I took a chance on this one.
I was glad I did.
I was highly entertained with an appropriate amount of fear for a self-pronounced scaredy cat.
Having finished all my journeying, but not the story, I sat outside in my car and listened to the end.
I enjoyed the story enormously. I notice that the author is quite prolific, so at some point I may purchase another of his books.
The one that catches my eye is the series of three stories set in the Hebrides.

Slow, but worthwhile

A ghost soldier is terrorising a family so they go to the famous TV ghost-hunter for help. Only problem is, he's a fake.

Beautifully read

Clever but longwinded. I often wanted to skip ahead. David Rintoul reads superbly, changing the pace to suit the action, making the whole story very believabe.

Gripping!

Bought this on a complete whim when I was in a rush but loved it, the narrator is excellent and the story extremely suspenseful! I think I will probably also buy the book, just the right amount of history, mystery and the macabre. It kept me guessing and was very enjoyable, would recommend!

Another spooky tale from F. G. Cottam

What did you like most about The Waiting Room?

I love the atmosphere and the build up to the climax at the end.

What other book might you compare The Waiting Room to, and why?

It reminds me of classic gothic stories, very dark and atmospheric, similar to Mary Shelly's Frankenstein.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, it was very gripping from the start.
