Summary

Thad trusts no one. He loves no one and refuses to have friends. He reluctantly agrees to allow an older gay couple adopt him so he can get out of juvie but doesn’t plan to stick around long. Before he has a chance to run from his new home, he meets a fascinating boy who shows him there is far more to Blackford, Indiana, than he could possibly imagine. It is only in Blackford that Thad’s life truly begins.

Very interesting and enjoyable story

Mark Roeder is becoming one of my favourite authors, this story is pretty good, goes at a great pace although some elements were foreseeable, but still a great story.

so relatable

the snarky dialogue is funny, cynicism is relatable, and the mystery held my attention. about half way through you will need a box of tissues... just saying

Compelling story

Another great story by Mark Roeder. I enjoyed this sweet story as I have with all of Mark's books. Very warm and comforting. I always enjoy the delicious sounding food items featured in these books. I can almost taste them! I was very charmed once again by the narration by Jerry Bradshaw. He makes the story come alive!

Sweet Story of Friendship with Bonus Spooky Stuff!

I was expecting a story about a boy's adventures with spooky things, but found a very sweet story about friendship. Not just a pie-in-the-sky "friendship is magic" tale, but a nice, organic development of friendship. I found Thad to be extremely well-written, a difficult task when writing about a teenager with a rough childhood.
The narrator was, as usual, fantastic! Jerry Bradshaw injects so much energy and personality into the story. He gives each character just enough of a different voice that it's impossible to get lost or mix characters up. It certainly doesn't hurt that his regular voice is just pleasant to listen to! I'm always delighted to see that he has a new recording out.

I Absolutely Loved This Book

Spolier Alert!!!! Only read review if you've already read or listened to this book. This was just as great as Dead Boys of Verona, I really hope that Roeder writes more books from a ghost perspective, I really enjoy it. The story was engaging, the characters were likable, and this narrative of the story was great!!! Wish I could give more that five stars. Money well spent and I'm glad to have used cash instead of a Audible credit
