Summary
Bastien is now the man of the house. His mom has given up everything to give him a new life and he’s determined to do everything in his power to take care of her. Verona, Indiana is Bastien’s chance to start over and he’s not about to waste the opportunity. The grumpy old man next door is most certainly not one of the more attractive features of Bastien’s new hometown, but Bastien’s opinion of him slowly begins to change.
More intriguing is another neighbor. Viktor is a wrestler for Verona High School and mows his lawn shirtless. Viktor stirs Bastien’s passion, but he tries desperately to hide his desires. He doesn’t want Verona to be Chicago all over again.
As he settles into his new life Bastien discovers that Verona is different from what he has known before and not in the boring, watching-corn-grow-for-entertainment way he anticipated. The little town of Verona is odd, perhaps even bizarre, but maybe here he can forget the friends who turned on him and the father who tried to kill him.
The Lawn Boy is a tale of friendship, love, lust, and acceptance.

Just my favourite sort of story
I read the book several years ago and liked it. Now I have listened to the Audible version and I liked it even better. I think one is able to enjoy being read to rather than reading the story oneself. There are echoed of being read to as a child which take one back to a happy time.

I know this is fiction, but.....
So, I don't believe the narrator took a single breath in the first several chapters. It seemed like one very long run-on sentence. Frustrating. Also, the story was completely unbelievable. There is no way that may gay boys go to the same school. Also, the narrator gave no distinction between characters. It was hard to follow who was actually speaking. Not the greatest Roeder book I've listened to.

What a dream
A great story with a simple plot but a timeless message. I really enjoyed the main character and his family story and other than the noticeable piecing together of the audio I enjoyed Lee’s performance.

Enjoyable (mostly) HS tale
A good set of characters in a setting that’s a bit idealized but hey why should we have to read about prejudice and violence all the time? It’s positive and quite endearing. Some hot descriptions of boys and some funny scenes. It’s a bit preachy at times though and the rehabilitation of the horrid old pair of neighbors is hard to stomach.

Fantastic narrator!
What made the experience of listening to Lawn Boy the most enjoyable?
The narrator Lee White was a little quick at first, but he settled into the characters and did as much as he could with the story.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Lawn Boy?
The moment when the neighbor picked up the main character after he got beat up at the park.
Have you listened to any of Lee White’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes. The book "Nuts About You" is also very good!
