Boring!

From reading the description I had high hopes for this. However it turned out to be one of the most boring books ever. About halfway through the story just becomes a mindless drudge of not a lot happening and incredibly depressing. I couldn’t finish it and I’m returning it for a refund

Great story spoiled by the narration

At the core of the story is one man's obsessive need to commune with the dead and the lengths that he will go to to achieve his ambition. As the self-proclaimed 'professor of ghosts' Erasmus Salt needs a girl to fulfil his desires and buys Lily Bell from her step-father. What follows is a dark and sinister tale of greed, power and hubris interspaced with the voices of the women who are directly impacted by his selfish dreams; Lily, his sister Faye and Lily's mother Ruth Bell. It is gripping and full of emotion with the fabulous backdrops of the Victorian theatre and circus life.

I listened to the audio version of the book the narrator was somewhat monotone and when she voiced the character of Lily adopted an awful childlike voice that just didn't work for me as a listener.

Evocative Voctorian setting

Immersive and evocative Victorian setting, very well researched and described - especially the Ramsgate sections. Reminded me of The Foundling which I recently read but I preferred this book. Some comments mentioned the narration being boring but I didn't feel that way and thought it was definitely fine!

dire narration and a dull story

This story was recommended to me by audible for being similar to ones I'd previously enjoyed but after multiple sittings and barely getting through it I just couldn't.

The premise is interesting but the story is dull, I think one of the best skills of a writer is to be able to make an unlikeable character interesting or worthwhile but this lacks that and even the character you should like is too simplistic. The story is worsened by the narration, with a shrill but dense sounding attempt at a "young female" voice it grates quickly. A lack of pacing in both the story and narration renders it an overall unenjoyable experience. The first time I haven't enjoyed an audiobook from audible.

UTTERLY BORING STORY & NARRATION

So disappointed with this book, we have returned it for a refund.
The boring storyline is not helped by the monotoned narrator who
sounds fed up like she is reading a never ending shopping list. After half an hour we could no longer stand listening to this as it became irritating.
