Summary

The journey through M. R. Carey's 'immersive, impeccably rendered world' (Kirkus) continues in The Trials of Koli - the second book of the Rampart trilogy.

Koli has been cast from his village and into the strange and deadly forest beyond. But he heard a story, once. A story about lost London, and the mysterious tech of the old times that was there. And if Koli can find it, there may be a way for him to redeem himself - by saving what's left of humanity.

Look out for the final novel in the Rampart trilogy: The Fall of Koli

Totally hooked!!

What a great book. I am ac fan of M R Carey & this latest did not disappoint. A brilliant follow up to the first in the trilogy. Good fun, lots of action, some very unique ideas interlaced with nods to the world now and what our near future may look like. I think this is a very clever idea and not at all like anything I’ve read before. Fantastic narration and all round would thoroughly recommend.

Brilliant follow up

I bought this one before finishing the previous one, I loved it just as much. Great imaginative storyline and superb narration. I bought the third before I finished this one.

Gripping story

I really like this series and find it hard to stop listening. A fascinating world. The narrators, especially Theo Solomon are very good. Looking forward to the last part.

So engrossing, an imaginative story well told, I would like it to go further than the trilogy.

Good story, disappointing narration

For a story resting so heavily on voice and accent, the RP narration was disappointing.

Have read most of the authors other novels and rate them very highly, so got the first Koli in series, now finished second.
It feels more of a young adult book.. But still kept listening as very engrossing and thought provoking.

The readers do a good job, which is important as it can make or break an audio book.

Really enjoyed the addition of Spinner as a narrator. It adds a welcome different perspective and angle. I was left wondering about these characters after the first in series. Spinners narration takes us back to the start of her tale and opens up links with Koli's journey and experiences.

I did have an issue with the clumsy and obvious shoehorning of the authors contemporary politics around the use of puberty blockers and children. This felt a bit disengenous to the story. While it completely fit that a 'shunned' character could be gender non conforming and unjustly cast out of a community, it felt that the character's experiences were molded around this point to be scored, and hardly likely in the context of an apocalyptic world.
Puberty blocker use on a child is not harmless and fully reversible (see NHS guidance). Needs to be said.

Much of the story was setting up the third installment, which I am looking forward to. Koli's cliffhanger was hard to bear. I must know what happens next.

I will definitely be introducing my teen son to the trilogy.

Brilliant

I love MR Carey’s brand of Dystopian fiction and this was just as good as his others. Great narration adds to the enjoyment of course and Theo Solomon and Saffron Coomber met that challenge head on. A great “middle book” which is a feat in itself. I can’t wait for the third part.

Wonderful

Brilliantly written, amazing world building and excellent, beautifully nuanced characterisation as well as breathtaking story telling. Very well read by both voice actors.

It is truly wonderful to find such a feminist, thoughtful Trans Positive writer after the heartbreak of JK. Thank you so much M.R Carey
