Summary
1821: Among the thousands of Irish deportees to the Caribbean British Colonies is a 10-year-old Irish boy, Art O’Neill. As an indentured servant on a sugar plantation in Jamaica, Art gradually acclimatizes to the exotic country and the unfamiliar customs of the African slaves.
When the new heirs to the plantation arrive from Ireland, they resurrect the ghosts of brutal injustices against Art. He bides his time and hides his abhorrence from his new master by channeling his energy into his work. During those years, he prospers, acquires land, sees his colored children freed after emancipation as he takes us on a multi-generational historical saga.
Eventually, Art is promised seven gold coins for seven decades of service. He doubts his master will part with the coins. The morning Art sets out to claim his gratuity, he ignores his sense of foreboding that he may not return home alive.
Ireland, 1991: One hundred years later, a skeleton is discovered beneath a fallen tree on the grounds of Lugdale Estate. By its side is a gold coin minted in 1870. Yseult, the owner of the estate, watches as events unfold, fearful of the long-buried truths that may emerge about her family’s past and its links to the slave trade. As the skeleton gives up its secrets, Yseult realizes she too can no longer hide.
Inspired by the real story of 2,000 Irish children deported to Jamaica and the statistics that 25 percent of Jamaican citizens claim Irish ancestry. The Tide Between Us is a powerful novel documenting true historical events and the resilience of the human spirit.

The Narrators accent was all wrong for this book
The narrators voice was all wrong , sometimes sounding American / Scottish.
The Irish language pronunciation was incorrect.
Why couldn’t they get an Irish speaking person to narrate?
It really detracted from the book.

Suffering Jaysus
I hate to be so critical but why is an Irish person not narrating an Irish person’s story? The narration is terrible and the accents are appalling. If the story wasn’t so interesting I’d not finish it.

Good story
An interesting and engaging story, but I felt the narration spoilt it. It was very halting with pauses in the wrong places and the emphasis sometimes placed on the wrong word. I was also reading the book in Kindle Unlimited and without this I wouldn’t have completed the story.

Interesting story
A interesting story, well written and compulsive listening. My only real criticism is the narration style was irritating and distracting because of it’s disjointed delivery. The poor narration made the story hard to follow at periods throughout the book as I found myself having to rewind the story to make sense of it. The periodic music seemed superfluous as well but other listeners may feel differently.

Poor narration
I had to stop listening to this. This narration was terrible. The accents were all over the place and the reading didn’t flow and was not at all engaging. Gutted I wasted a credit.

Dreadful narration
Quite interesting story but disjointed and unsatisfactory experience overall. The jolting narration was painful at best and prevented any continuity in the story. It’s a shame really.

Disappointing narration
I didn't get further than the first chapter due to the dreadful narration. The accents were appalling and grated and I am trying to return this title. If I could rate the narration zero I would do. and many others agree. This is the second novel Ive recently purchased where the narration was so disappointingly poor. One more chance Audible then Im gone !

Worth Reading
I received this in paperback form initially, but decided to go with audible so I could carry on with my day.
I found the narration delivery was very poor, and could have given up after the first chapter. He was not putting the correct emphasis on the sentence, mispronouncing place names, substituting words with the wrong word, eg saying dining table instead of dressing table, all these things I found distracting my attention away from the story.
Usually I can go through a book of this size in two days, but this took me over a week, I had to keep turning it off. I was determined to finish it, which I did, but I would definitely recommended reading it.

A great story sadly ruined by terrible nattation.
Seriously! You can't tell me that there are no Irish narrators. I found myself physically cringing on occasions.

Prepare to succeed...
It's a pity Jack didn't read ahead to see where the ends of sentences are...it made for a choppy read with bits added to what sounded like the ends of sentences. This changed some of the meanings or messed with the flow

Horrible narration
Wonderful story nearly ruined by poor narration and production. I don’t want to hear the narrator swallow. He halted mid sentence over and over obscuring the meaning. He pronounced names differently throughout and the accents were unbelievable and inconsistent. I almost quit listening many times but the story itself kept me.

Should have had a better narrator
It’s a good story with vivid descriptions and interesting characters, but the narrator almost ruined it for me. His phrasing is strange and halting. His pronunciations of character and place names were not consistent. His Irish accent comes and goes. I love listening to audiobooks, but I wish I had read this one myself instead of hearing this narrator read it.

First Half was Very Good
But the second half..! Maybe it was more the painful narration. The odd pauses and inflections were awful and at least once the character’s accent completely changed so maybe the editing was terrible too.
The story felt like it wrapped up too quickly and oddly, but overall was interesting and informative about a piece of history that was only vaguely familiar to me. I’d recommend reading it though or only listening to the first half of this book. After Art goes to the house stop listening and get the paper copy.

The music was so irritating
I don’t know who decided there needed to be music at the beginning/end of chapter but it is awful! The reader was ok. The story was good.

Very confusing
I had to listen to the story three times to connect the dots. Maybe I’m slow. It would’ve been nice each time they changed eras or dates they would’ve let us know what time They were in. The reader sounded like a computer that had no inflections or emotions. There were stops in the middle of sentences for no reason. I think if I had read the book I would’ve liked it better but didn’t have the time.

compelling story
This is a fascinating story about how our traits are not new to the world, but shared by family that span generations and sometimes vast oceans, too. It's a story of good overcoming evil and happiness disregarding wealth to thrive. For me, the performance wasn't awful as some reviews were detailed here. I greatly enjoyed listening to it and tried to make free time during the day to get further along in the story.

Good story - horrible narrative
The historical fiction is interesting, however; the reading of the story sounds like it is robotic. The pauses and inflection was constantly off making it unenjoyable to listen to. Often it changed the meaning and diminished the storyline. Halfway through I looked to see if Audible acknowledged that it was a computer generated read but I couldn’t find any reference to it. They should be required to disclose this. I will be canceling my subscription.

Never liked any slavery
I wanted to finish
The story came full circle with all the people in Ireland. How about closing it out with the Africans ?

Not for me
The story didn’t grab me, and the reader was too formal. He seemed to pause at the end of lines rather than the at end of sentences.
