To exraordinary to be beliveable. Badly read.
It was only possible to listen to the slow slow reading if it was set to 1.25 time. The characters managed to explore every single extraordinary adventure possible in the shortest possible time. From being dispossessed to galley slaves to deportation and even piracy. It is just not believable that they would have survived.

Great story spanning history of religious beliefs
I thought I would not enjoy this book, finding the idea of a family losing everything rather than give up their religious beliefs intolerable. However the trials and tribulations of the family captured me and I could not stop listening. The narration was excellent and truly bought the characters alive, an epic trilogy.

Fascinating story of a often forgotten time in history
Well worth listening to. With the story ranging from their native France to Geneva, the Palatinate, the Caribbean, the New World, Ireland and London this period of history is recreated in depth. The morsels one had forgotten are woven together to remind one of religious intolerance and the stubborn belief that sustained Huguenots in the seventeenth century.

Interesting, what struggles
This is the first to third books I’ve read/listened to by this author and I would listen to another.
These books had some interesting, historical points in them. I now have a clearer understanding of the persecution of the Huguenots. This is a story of persecution, struggles, personal growth and perseverance.
Book 1: Deciding to stay in their home rather than leave like some of their acquaintances, the family comes under persecution. They’re forced to leave their home and become separated.
Jeanne comes into her own, showing resilience and fortitude.
Book 2 continues as the father is indentured on a plantation in the Caribbean. Jeanne is in Geneva, having established herself as a weaver. Her son now with her, her heart is lighter, but their trials are not over.
Book 3 Jacob and Jeanne continue to deal with their circumstances all the while trying to make their way to London to reconnect. As war erupts again, their journeys become that much more difficult.
This is the first to third books I’ve listened to by this narrator ( David Pickering) and I would listen to another. He did well with the character voices- kids, women and men alike. He has a comfortable cadence and pleasant tone.
There are no explicit sex scenes, excessive violence or swearing.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and voluntarily left this unbiased review.

Became too sexually graphic.
The opening story line is wonderful. I was reading it for the historical value. I am not sure why this excellent author thought that the graphic sex would enhance the storyline. Too bad Mr. Monk got sidetracked. He is too excellent a writer to fall prey to that ploy.

I wanted to love it.
The Huguenots were a part of life in Charleston SC where I grew up. Wanting to know more about them, I listened to this book. Learning more was a good thing, but the story just dragged on without relief. When relief came, it was so close to the end and so unlikely (jewels) that I could not but feel cheated. Another thing: how is this 3 books? That wasn't clear. The sound effects between chapters were really poorly done and unnecessary. Sorry to be so negative, but must be honest. Ok story. EXCELLENT narrator. Will listen to the narrator again for sure.
