Enlightening and entrancing
An insightful and meaningful story with robust backstory and delicate writing. Very illuminating to a western reader, thought provoking exposure to other cultures and mindsets

It puts current issues into perspective
Reflecting a lot of what's going on today, it's almost surprising that this came out over 15 years ago. It put a lot of things into perspective such as why the government would keep knowledge of extraterrestrial intelligence a secret, and so on. Very interesting read and I can't wait to get started on the sequel. The American accent attempted by the reader was comical.and distracting, but otherwise he did a great job.

An excellent book crossing sci-fi with political history
The story is excellent and full of detail. The only criticism I have is the narrator appeared to not know how to pronounce Chinese names so appeared to have left gaps, then recorded the Chinese names after with some help then edited them in. The result is when I Chinese name comes up the sentence flow seems to skip a bit which I found quite distracting.

Sweet depths
While it takes a little time to drift into the main plot pieces, all the build up and explanation to the earlier years have a fundamental purpose to the later characters. Beautifully woven and mind bending construction of deep science concepts. A quality piece of science fiction. Can’t wait to start the next books. Xie Xie Liu CinXin

Interesting
A great story that grips you from the start. Some of the characters are little 2 dimensional and some of the more technical parts are hard to grasp right away but the world the story brings to life is truly excellent and worth a few one note characters.

A lot going on
Probably better in it’s written format
For some reason the reading position changed (could be a problem with my device) and it was difficult to find my way back. I may have missed whole sections . I will try to read it in the old fashioned way

Excellent audible book
Superb performance, excellent narration, watched the first series on Netflix and this was an excellent purchase after that, looking forward to the remaining books.

If only…
…the narrator wasn’t so distractingly awful at putting on an American accent - the moment the US characters enter the fray in the second half of the book it became essentially unlistenable for me. A good bedding for watching the tv show now at least.
